
Women's Water Polo Drops Decisions to No. 17 SDSU, Michigan

LOS ANGELES – Brown University women's water polo began play at the LMU Invitational with an 11-5 setback to No. 17 San Diego State University and an 18-5 loss to the University of Michigan at the Burns Aquatics Center on Friday afternoon.
On the campus of Loyola Marymount University, the Bears (8-9) fell to the nationally-ranked Aztecs (13-11) in their first game before dropping a decision to the Wolverines (8-10) in the nightcap.
Freshman Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) led the Bears with three goals between the two games, and rookie goalie Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) totaled 22 saves between the two contests.
Next, Brown continues play at the LMU Invitational tomorrow with games against the host and No. 12 Lions (1:30 p.m. ET) and Concordia University, Irvine (5:15 p.m. ET).
Game 1 – No. 17 San Diego St. 11, Brown 5
Dakan made seven saves in the first half to help Brown remain within 3-1 before the Bears fell to No. 17 San Diego State, 11-5, in their first game at the LMU Invitational.
Sophomore Shannon Crowley (Seal Beach, Calif.), Heilman, sophomore Marisa Kolokotronis (Sacramento, Calif.), junior Victoria Pierotti (Newport Beach, Calif.), and junior Olivia Santiago (Los Altos, Calif.) each scored a goal for the Bears. Dakan finished with 12 saves and three steals.
Senior Rebecca Zak (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Santiago each tallied three steals while Heilman compiled two assists and two steals.
Pierottii tied the game at 1-1 with 1:02 remaining in the first quarter after the Aztecs scored the game's first goal 24 seconds earlier. San Diego St. added two goals midway through the second stanza to take a 3-1 lead into halftime.
The Aztecs posted five goals in the third quarter to establish an 8-2 advantage despite a tally from Crowley at the 2:53 mark of the frame.
Kolokotronis and Santiago netted goals for Brown in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 9-4. San Diego St. pulled ahead at 11-4 before Heilman scored with eight seconds remaining.

Game 2 – Michigan 18, Brown 5
The Bears scored four goals in the second quarter but fell to Michigan, 18-5, in the team's second game at the LMU Invitational.
Heilman led Brown with two goals while senior Emily Klein (Pleasanton, Calif.), Pierotti, and senior Liz Rosen (San Anselmo. Calif.) each tacked on a single goal. In net, Dakan stopped nine shots.
Santiago posted a team-high three steals to go with two ejections drawn while Zak notched two steals.
Michigan opened the game with a 4-0 lead after the first quarter as three different performers scored goals.
The Bears matched the Wolverines in the second quarter as Rosen netted a goal to start the period. Klein and Pierotti each registered goals midway through the frame to keep Brown within three goals at 5-2 and 6-3 respectively.
After Michigan took an 8-3 lead, Heilman scored with 1:48 remaining in the first half to pull Brown within 8-4.
The Wolverines outscored Brown, 3-0, in the third quarter to push their advantage to 11-4 prior to posting seven goals in the final frame. Heilman scored a goal for the Bears at the 5:18 mark of the fourth.
