Fencing's Jones Earns All-America at NCAA Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Junior Simon Jones earned Honorable Mention All-America honors with a 12th-place finish in men's epee to lead Brown University men's fencing at the 2015 NCAA Fencing Championships at Ohio State's French Field House on Friday.
On the final day of men's competition at the tournament, Jones (Louisville, Colo.) finished with an 11-12 (.478) record to become the Bears' first All-American since Kelly McGuire in 2013. Sophomore Alex Palabrica (Los Angeles, Calif.) came in 16th place in men's sabre with a 10-13 (.435) record.
Competing at the NCAA Championships for the second straight year, Jones totaled 90 touches scored and 85 touches received for a +5 indicator over his 23 bouts. He went 0-8 on Friday after ranking second in men's epee after the first three rounds on Thursday.
Palabrica compiled 83 touches scored and 95 touches received over the five rounds for a -12 indicator in his first appearance at the NCAA Championships.
He went 1-3 in the fourth round scoring 14 touches to 18 touches received. In the fifth round, he logged a 2-2 mark with 14 touches scored to 16 received. Palabrica tallied a 7-8 record on the first day of competition.
As a team, the Bears stand in 14th place out of 20 schools.
Brown's women's contingent of senior Christine Whalen (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.), sophomore Clara Tondato Da Ruos (Milan, Italy), and freshman Signe Ferguson (Wilmington, Del.) will begin competition tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. Whalen and Tondato Da Ruos will compete in women's sabre while Ferguson will take part in women's epee.
