
Women's Water Polo Edges Harvard, Finishes Second at Inaugural Ivy Championship

PRINCETON, N.J. – Senior Liz Rosen scored the game-winning goal as Brown University women's water polo beat Harvard University, 6-5, before falling to Princeton University, 9-4, in the championship game at the inaugural Ivy Championship on Sunday at Princeton's DeNunzio Pool.
The second-seeded Bears (2-3) edged the third-seeded Crimson (4-4) as Rosen (San Anselmo, Calif.) netted her goal with less than a minute to play in the morning's first semifinal. Brown lost to the host Tigers (7-1) – seeded first and ranked 12th in the nation – in the afternoon's title match.
Sophomore Shannon Crowley (Seal Beach, Calif.) led the Bears with four goals between the two contests.
Next, Brown returns to action on Feb. 28 when the Bears play Gannon (2:20 p.m.) and Mercyhurst (6:20 p.m.) at Bucknell.
Match 1 – Brown 6, Harvard 5
Rosen scored the game-winning goal with 47.48 seconds to play, and freshman goalie Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) made several key saves in the second half as Brown beat Harvard, 6-5, in the semifinals.
Rosen notched the decisive goal with a shot from the right wing after the Bears worked the ball around the perimeter.
Crowley and Rosen led the Bears with two goals apiece while sophomore Marisa Kolokotronis (Sacramento, Calif.), junior Olivia Santiago (Los Altos, Calif.), and senior Rebecca Zak (Carlsbad, Calif.) each added single tallies.
Crowley added four steals, Kolokotronis posted two assists to go with three ejections drawn, and Dakan totaled nine saves.
After the Crimson netted the game's first goal, the Bears responded with two goals to take a 2-1 lead after the first quarter. Santiago converted on a turnaround shot from two meters before Crowley scored on a skip shot from five meters with 22 seconds to play in the quarter.
The Bears claimed a 5-2 lead at halftime using a 3-0 run after the Crimson tallied the period's first goal. Rosen started the run with a shot from beyond the 5-meter mark at 5:56. Kolokotronis scored the next goal with a 2-meter shot before Crowley registered a penalty-shot goal with 2:13 remaining in the half.
Harvard registered the third quarter's only goal while Dakan turned aside a bid on a penalty shot with less than 30 seconds to go in the third frame.
Dakan kept the Bears up 5-3 as she stopped a point blank shot early in the fourth quarter before Harvard pulled within 5-3 midway through the final stanza. The Crimson tied the game at 5-5 with 3:04 to play despite another save from Dakan 30 seconds earlier.
After Dakan logged another save with just over a minute remaining, Rosen gave the Bears their 6-5 lead with her goal with under 48 seconds left on the clock.

Match 2 – Princeton 9, Brown 4
Senior Emily Klein (Pleasanton, Calif.) tied the game at 4-4 with a goal midway through the third quarter, but Brown fell to Princeton, 9-4, in the championship game.
Crowley paced Brown with two goals while freshman Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) tacked on a goal for the Bears. Heilman tallied three steals, Santiago drew three ejections, and junior Emma Dodd (Pasadena, Calif.) notched two assists.
In goal, Santiago stopped nine shots for the second straight game.
Brown tallied the game's first goal just less than two minutes into the contest as Crowley scored from five meters out from straight on. The Tigers posted the next two goals to take a 2-1 lead with 2:16 left in the first quarter.
Crowley netted another Brown goal from straight on from five meters to tie the game at 2-2 with 46 seconds to go in the opening stanza.
Princeton registered a goal to end the first period and posted the second frame's first goal before Brown pulled within 4-3 as Heilman scored from the left wing with 22.91 seconds remaining in the half.
The Bears tied the game at 4-4 at the 4:26 mark of the third quarter on Klein's goal from five meters on the right side, but the Tigers notched two goals later in the period and recorded all three goals in the final frame.
