
Three Seniors Win, Wrestling Falls to Columbia, 19-15

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Seniors Billy Watterson, Ophir Bernstein, and Sebastien Levin each won bouts in their final home match, but Brown University wrestling fell to Columbia University, 19-15, at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Saturday afternoon.
In the final dual meet of the season, sophomores Steven Galiardo and Justin Staudenmayer also won bouts for the Bears (4-10, 2-7 EIWA) against the visiting Lions (6-5, 5-5 EIWA).
Watterson (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) opened the match with a win for the Bears at 125 lbs., defeating Johnson Mai, 3-1, in sudden victory. Watterson and Mai each tallied an escape during regulation before Watterson posted a takedown with 14 seconds left in the extra session.
At 149 lbs., Galiardo (Chicago, Ill.) registered the Bears' second win via sudden victory with a 6-4 triumph over Connor Sutton. Galiardo charted an escape in the first and a takedown and escape in the second stanza. After Sutton tied the bout 4-4 in the third period, Galiardo scored a takedown 14 seconds into overtime for the win.
Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) tied the match score at 9-9 with a 2-1 victory over Tyler Ponte at 157 lbs. Each wrestler recorded an escape, but Staudenmayer outlasted his opponent, tallying over a minute of riding time in the final stanza.
At 184 lbs., Bernstein (Allen, Texas) won his match 1-0 over Zack Hernandez with an escape right after the whistle in the third period.
Levin (Amenia, N.Y.) recorded Brown's third win through sudden victory with a 7-5 win over Matt Idelson at 197 lbs. Levin registered an escape in the first period and two escapes in the second to take a 4-3 lead through two periods. He tied the bout with an escape in the third and won with a takedown midway through the fourth frame.
Senior Ricky McDonald (Carson City, Nev.) nearly logged Brown's fourth sudden-victory win on the day but fell to Shane Hughes, 5-3, at 174 lbs. McDonald posted a takedown just before the buzzer in the third period before Hughes charted a takedown with 17 seconds left in the bonus frame.
Prior to the dual, Brown honored its six seniors – Bernstein, Daniel Flowers (Dexter, Mich.), Levin, McDonald, Zachary Tanenbaum (Leawood, Kan.), and Watterson – for their hard work and dedication to the program.
Watterson picked up his team-leading 12th dual win of the season while Staudenmayer earned his 30th win overall on the year – a team best. Bernstein improved his record to 25-12 in 2014-15.
Next, Brown will compete at the EIWA Championships from March 6-7 at Lehigh.
