PRINCETON, N.J. – Three players posted multiple-point performances and sophomore Tim Ernst (Pickering, Ontario) made 31 saves as the Brown men's hockey team downed Princeton, 4-1, for its fourth straight win in Friday evening's ECAC contest at Hobey Baker Rink.
Brown moves to 8-17-1 overall and 5-13-1 in the ECAC, while Princeton drops to 4-18-3 on the season and 2-15-2 in the conference.
With an assist in the second period, senior Matt Lorito (Oakville, Ontario) became the 24th member of the 100-point club in program history, and the first to reach the milestone since Jack Maclellan in 2012.
In addition to Lorito, who had two assists, junior Nick Lappin (Geneva, Ill.) and rookie Sam Lafferty (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) both had one goal and one assist. Freshman Tyler Bird (Andover, Mass.) and junior Mark Naclerio (Milford, Conn.) also scored for the Bears. Ernst picked up his fourth straight win in net, while Colton Phinney made 23 saves on the other end for the Tigers.
The first period featured limited opportunities on both sides, but the Bears struck first late in the stanza, when Bird notched his second goal of the season at 17:22. After Lappin dumped the puck into the offensive zone, Lafferty controlled it long enough to keep the play alive before he slid a pass to open ice in front of the blue line. Bird then came in and skated into the right circle for a shot over the shoulder of Phinney to give the Bears the lead, 1-0.
Brown held a 7-5 edge in shots during the first period.
After Brown started the period with two successful penalty kills in the opening five minutes, the Bears rattled off three more goals during the rest of the stanza for a four-goal advantage.
Naclerio gave the Bears a two-goal lead at 12:49 with his ninth tally of the season. After senior Joey de Concilys (St. Catharine's, Ontario) blasted a shot from the point, Lorito knocked down the puck to Naclerio, who was right there for the rebound with a backhanded shot to make it 2-0.
Brown continued to find the back of the net at 14:31 when Lafferty scored his fourth goal of the season. Fellow rookie Max Willman (Barnstable, Mass.) carried the puck down the left side and sent a centering pass to Lafferty, who skated just past the goal, but quickly slid a shot toward the net as the puck hit Phinney's skate and crossed the line for the 3-0 advantage.
From there, Lappin scored with seven seconds left in the period for his ninth goal of the season. Lorito gained possession behind the net and evaded a few pressing Tigers, before he quickly found Lappin right in front for the tip-in, as the Bears held a 4-0 lead at the second intermission.
Brown outshot the Tigers by a 14-7 margin in the second period.
Kevin Liss put the Tigers on the board with a shorthanded goal at 11:48 in the third period, but it was not enough to stage a comeback, as the Bears cruised to the victory.
Brown returns to action tomorrow at No. 11 Quinnipiac at 7 p.m. Brown's next home game is on Friday, Feb. 27 against Cornell at 7 p.m. Tickets for all Brown men's hockey games can be purchased online, calling the Brown Athletics Ticket Office at (401) 863-2773, or walking up to the Box Office located in the Pizzitola Sports Center, open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
