HAMDEN, Conn. – Juniors Joe Prescott (Norwell, Mass.) and Nick Lappin (Geneva, Ill.) both scored in the second period and Tim Ernst (Pickering, Ontario) made 36 saves as the Brown men's hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with No. 11 Quinnipiac on Saturday evening at the TD Bank Sports Center.
Brown now stands at 8-17-2 overall and 5-13-2 in the ECAC to remain unbeaten over the last five contests. Quinnipiac moves to 20-8-4 on the season and 15-2-3 in the conference to secure the ECAC regular season title.
After Prescott and Lappin scored in the second period, Quinnipiac responded with a pair of goals in the third by Danny Federico and Sam Anas to even the score. Michael Garteig made 19 saves in net for Quinnipiac.
The two teams were scoreless after the opening period, while Quinnipiac outshot the Bears by a 12-8 margin in the stanza. The Bobcats had the first power play of the game with just over four minutes remaining, but Landon Smith rang a shot off the post and Ernst came up with a glove save at the end of the attempt to keep the home side off the board.
Brown kicked off the scoring at 4:54 in the second period when Prescott registered his third goal of the season. After a Quinnipiac turnover in the offensive zone, the junior took advantage of a loose puck in the slot as he blasted a shot past Garteig to give the Bears the early advantage.
The Bears tacked on another goal at 12:38 when Lappin finished a breakaway with a nifty move in front of the net to give the visitors the two-goal lead at the second intermission.
Quinnipiac answered back with a pair of goals within a two-minute span midway through the third period. After Federico scored a power-play goal at 8:35, Anas forced a shot through traffic in front of the net to even the score at 2-2.
Despite a five-minute major penalty by QU at 16:38, the Bears could not find the back of the net during the final minutes of regulation, as two teams headed to extra time. Once Quinnipiac killed off the final 1:38 of the power play, the Bobcats made rush to the net, but Justin Agosta rang a shot off the post and Ernst turned away two more shots to keep the score tied.
After Garteig returned the favor when he denied a late attack by Matt Lorito (Oakville, Ontario), a pair of penalties forced four-on-four hockey for the final minute, but Federico's final shot was blocked by Massimo Lamacchia (Maple, Ontario) to seal the overtime draw.
Brown returns to action on Friday, Feb. 27 when the Bears host Cornell at 7 p.m. Tickets for all Brown men's hockey games can be purchased online, calling the Brown Athletics Ticket Office at (401) 863-2773, or walking up to the Box Office located in the Pizzitola Sports Center, open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
