PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Jordin Alexander's (Fishers, Ind.) career high 31 points fueled a furious rally, but the Brown women's basketball team fell short to Penn, 83-75, on Saturday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
The Bears suffer their second defeat of the weekend to drop to 9-13 (3-5 Ivy), while the Quakers improve to 14-7 (5-2 Ivy) with the win.
Alexander's 31 points were the most scored by a Bear since Barbara Maloni's 40 points against Penn on March 4, 2000. The junior shot a gaudy 14-of-22 from the field against Penn's zone defense, the third-most single-game field goals in team history.
Freshman Kennedy Martin (Los Angeles, Calif.) continued her strong recent play with a double-double on 16 points and 13 rebounds, with nine coming on the offensive glass.
Brown also got a strong contribution from senior Sophie Bikofsky (Newton, Mass.), as the captain chipped in with 17 points and five rebounds. Ellise Sharpe (Tipp City, Ohio) added career highs in rebounds (7) and assists (6).
Kara Bonenberger and Michelle Nwokedi each posted double-doubles for the Quakers on Saturday.
Similar to last night's tilt against unbeaten Princeton, the Bears opened with an 8-6 lead before a barrage of three-pointers from the Quakers, including three treys from Kathleen Roche, gave the visitors a 28-19 advantage.
Alexander kept the Bears in the game with sizzling shooting from the field in the first half, connecting on 9-of-11 attempts from the field for a team high 18 points. An 8-2 run, capped by the junior's layup, drew the Bears within five at 32-27.
The duo of Nwokedi and Bonenberger were immense in the paint for the Quakers at the end of half, as Penn upped its lead back up to 10 before Megan Reilly (Norwood, N.J.) pulled Brown within eight at 44-36 at the half.
Alexander's patented pull-up jumper and a trey from Bikofsky brought the Bears back within six at 53-47. Penn responded to regain a nine-point cushion before another Bikofsky long distance shot cashed in to make it a two-possession game once again.
The Quakers appeared ready to run away with the game, but strong work on the offensive glass from Martin gave the freshman her first career double-double and led a Brown comeback charge in the final minutes.
After being denied at the rim twice, Martin's third attempt after two offensive rebounds was good and brought Brown from a 14-point deficit to just four with 1:19 to play. However, the Bears were unable to draw any closer as Penn held strong and connected on their free throws in the final seconds to seal the win.
Up next, the Bears open up a four-game road trip next weekend at Columbia and Cornell.
