Women's Water Polo Tops NYAC, Falls to Marist on Opening Day

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Sophomore Shannon Crowley totaled five goals as Brown University women's water polo beat the New York Athletic Club, 7-6, and fell to No. 20 Marist College, 14-6, on the team's opening day on Sunday at McCann Natatorium.
The Bears (0-1) topped NYAC in the team's season opener, 7-6, behind four goals from Crowley (Seal Beach, Calif.) before falling to the host Red Foxes (2-1) later in the afternoon, 14-6.
Between the two contests for the Bears, senior Liz Rosen (San Anselmo, Calif.) recorded four goals, junior Olivia Santiago (Los Altos, Calif.) drew eight ejections, and freshman goalie Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) made 18 saves in her first collegiate action.
Next, Brown returns to play on Feb. 7 with neutral-site matches in the Princeton Invitational against Iona (10 a.m.) and Wagner (6 p.m.).

Crowley netted a team-high four goals, Dakan stopped 11 shots, and Brown defeated NYAC, 7-6, in the squad's first competition of 2015. Crowley added three steals and an ejection drawn while Dakan tacked on three steals.
Sophomore Marisa Kolokotronis (Sacramento, Calif.) notched two goals, three ejections drawn, and a steal, and Rosen posted a goal, three assists, three steals, and two sprints won.
Freshman Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) drew a team-best four ejections, and Santiago drew three ejections in the match.

Match 2 – Marist 14, Brown 6
Rosen scored a team-high three goals, and Santiago drew a team-best five ejections, but Brown absorbed a 14-6 setback against nationally-ranked Marist in the team's second game of the afternoon.
In goal, Dakan turned aside seven shots in addition to making a 5-meter save and a steal. Junior Emma Dodd (Pasadena, Calif.) chipped in two steals and two ejections drawn on the defensive end.
Rosen charted two steals, two sprints won, and an ejection drawn while Crowley contributed a goal, an assist, and a steal. Santiago added a goal and a steal, and Heilman netted a goal to round out the team's scoring.
Santiago netted the game's first goal to put Brown up 1-0 before Marist responded with five goals to take a 5-1 lead after the first quarter. The Red Foxes' edge grew to 9-1 midway through the second stanza.
The Bears closed the half on a 2-1 spurt behind goals from Crowley and Rosen to pull within 10-3 at the break.
Marist held a 13-5 advantage after three periods despite tallies from Heilman and Rosen. Rosen scored the visitors' last goal in the fourth quarter.
