PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's swimming & diving team defeated UMass, 210-89 on Saturday at Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center, in the team's home-opening meet.
"In training we are always working towards a smart, disciplined and aggressive racing style," said head coach Kate Kovenock. "This afternoon a number of our women were able to implement changes based on the last two weeks of practice and competition. This is very important to see leading into the Big Al Invite in December. A few of our sprinters showed new speed - Aja Grande in the 50 free and Ally Donahue in the 100 Breast. But it was Senior Captain Gina Matsumoto (2 wins - 200 Fly, 400 IM) and sophomore Korby Simpson (3 wins- 1000 Free, 100 Back, and 500 Free) who really lead the way for the entire team with tough, smart races."
Sophomore Korbyn Simpson (Baltimore, Md.), junior Elly Vitek (Western Springs, Ill.) and freshman Tatiana Prendella (Bernardsville, N.J.) started the team off individually, placing first through third in the 1000-yard freestyle with times of 10:29.56, 10:39.71 and 10:42.23, respectively.
An underclassmen squad of sophomore Sarah Cronin (Westfield, N.J.), freshman Jackie Karpowicz (Wakefield, R.I.) and freshman Maddie Salesky (San Rafael, Calif.) were the next Bears to finish 1-2-3, with times of 1:53.51, 1:54.90 and 1:54.95, respectively, in the 200-yard freestyle.
In the 100-yard backstroke, Simpson paced the Bears and swam to her second first-place finish of the day, with a time of 59.77. Sophomore Natsumi Horikawa (Rockville, Md.) touched the wall at 59.72 for second while sophomore Jenna Zagoren (Cherry Hill, N.J.) finished third (1:00.09).
Sophomore Ally Donahue (Tampa, Fla.) (1:03.75), junior Katie Roach (Colorado Springs, Colo.) (1:05.83) and sophomore Hailey Jacobson (Missoula, Mont.) (1:08.27) kept things rolling, grabbing the top three spots again for Brown in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Next up in the 200-yard butterfly, senior Gina Matsumoto (Farmington Hills, Mich.) placed first with a time of 2:05.13 while junior Caroline Vexler (Moreland Hills, Ohio) finished second (2:06.13) and freshman Emma Wittmer (Edina, Minn.) finished third (2:10.03).
In the 50-yard freestyle, sophomore Aja Grande (Honolulu, Hawaii) claimed the top spot with a mark of 23.69 while senior Reia Tong (Bethesda, Md.) was right behind her at 23.89 to claim second.
Tong, Grande and Salesky went 1-2-3 with times of 51.80, 51.98 and 53.42, respectively in the 100-yard freestyle.
Roach, Donahue and freshman Kendall Crawford (Greenwood Village, Colo.) collected the top three spots in the 200-yard breaststroke, with marks of 2:21.45, 2:24.28 and 2:26.65, respectively.
The Bears return to action to compete at the Big Al Invite, hosted by Princeton, running Friday, Dec. 4 through Sunday, Dec. 6.
