TROY, N.Y. – Senior Nick Lappin (Geneva, Ill.) scored a pair of goals and three other players posted multiple-point efforts as the Brown men's hockey team skated to a 3-3 draw with Rensselaer in Saturday night's ECAC contest at Houston Field House.
After an RPI penalty put the Bears on the power play with 2:21 left in overtime, Max Willman (Barnstable, Mass.) scored in the final minute for his second game winner in as many nights, but the goal was initially ruled no good and due to difficulties with the replay system, the play was unable to be reviewed.
Brown (1-3-1, 1-2-1) earned the three-point road weekend after a comeback overtime win at Union on Friday. Rensselaer moved to 5-4-2 overall and 4-0-2 in the conference.
Lappin now has seven points behind four goals and three assists in five games this season. Rookie Tommy Marchin (Algonac, Mich.) scored the other goal for the Bears and also added an assist. Senior Mark Naclerio (Milford, Conn.) registered three assists and freshman Max Gottlieb (Old Bridge, N.J.) had two helpers.
Junior goalie Tim Ernst (Pickering, Ontario) stopped 26 shots for the Bears, while Cam Hackett had 29 saves on the other end.
Marchin scored a power-play goal with 36 seconds left in the first period to put the Bears on the board. Naclerio skated through the right circle and hit Marchin in front of the net to set up the one-timer past Hackett.
Rensselaer evened the score in the second period when Riley Bourbonnais notched a power-play goal at 12:06 to make it 1-1 at the second intermission. Rensselaer outshot the Bears, 12-7, in each of the first two periods.
Brown came right back with a 15-5 shot advantage in the third frame. Nick Lappin gave the Bears a three-goal lead with a pair of tallies in the opening three minutes of the period. He first put the Bears in front 27 seconds into the stanza, taking a feed from Naclerio on the right side, and then followed up with a power-play goal at 2:29 to make it 3-1.
RPI responded, however, with two goals before the midway point of the period as Kenny Gillespie and Zach Schroeder both found the back of the net to even it all up at three goals apiece and force overtime.
Brown outshot the Engineers, 32-29.
Brown returns to College Hill next weekend for a pair of home games against Colgate (11/20) and Cornell (11/21).
