
Volleyball Takes Two Sets, Falls at Cornell in Five, 3-2

ITHACA, N.Y. – Freshman Sabrina Stillwell recorded 20 kills, and seniors Shannon Frost and Rachele Killian each posted her third double-double of the season, but Brown University volleyball fell at Cornell University, 3-2 (23-25, 25-22, 11-25, 25-22, 15-12) on Saturday night at Newman Arena.
The Bears (10-12, 4-6 Ivy) took the first and third sets and outscored the Big Red (6-14, 2-6 Ivy), 106-99, over the entirety of the match, but the hosts answered with second and fourth set wins prior to rallying for a victory in the decisive fifth set.
Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) tallied 20 or more kills in a match for the second time this season to go with a .319 hitting percentage. Frost (Santa Ana, Calif.) totaled 10 kills and a match-high 21 digs for her third double-double in her last five matches.
Killian (Laguna Beach, Calif.) led Brown with 25 assists alongside 11 digs. Junior Sarah Lucenti (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) dished out 16 assists, and freshman Elisa Merten (Woodside, Calif.) contributed 15 digs.
Neither team could gain an advantage larger than three points in set one until Brown logged a 24-20 lead late in the set. The Big Red rattled off three straight points, but the visitors held on for the 25-23 set win.
In set two, Cornell took an early 12-9 lead before Brown countered to grab a 16-14 edge behind a 7-2 run. The Big Red pulled back ahead at 23-19, and though the Bears came within 23-22, the hosts gained a 25-22 victory in the frame.
Brown captured a 2-1 set lead with a 25-11 triumph in the third period. The Bears opened the frame with a 9-2 edge and extended their advantage to 22-8 en route to the set victory.
Cornell tied the match at two sets apiece with a 25-22 win in set four in response. The Big Red pulled ahead at 13-8 and maintained an edge at 20-16. Brown trimmed its deficit to 23-22, but the hosts claimed the set's last two points.
In the fifth frame, Brown used a 6-3 spurt to turn an 8-6 deficit at the switch into a 12-11 advantage. Cornell answered, taking the set and match's final four points to pull out the win.
Next, Brown remains on the road in Ivy play at Penn (Friday, Nov. 6, 7 p.m.) and at Princeton (Saturday, Nov. 7, 5 p.m.).
