
Volleyball Drops 3-0 Decision at Penn

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Sophomore Casey Tierney posted 10 kills, and senior Rachele Killian tallied her fourth double-double of the year, but Brown University volleyball dropped a 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-17) decision to the University of Pennsylvania on Friday night at the Palestra.
The Bears (10-13, 4-7 Ivy) challenged the Quakers (11-12, 5-6 Ivy) in each set despite missing a pair of starters. The two teams split the season series after Brown beat Penn at home, 3-0, on Oct. 17.
Killian (Laguna Beach, Calif.) recorded her third double-double in her last four matches with 13 assists and 11 digs while Tierney (San Jose, Calif.) totaled double-figure kills for the third time this season.
Sophomore Melissa Cairo (Hillsborough, Calif.) and freshman Elisa Merten (Woodside, Calif.) each contributed 13 digs while junior setter Sarah Lucenti (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) compiled 11 assists and eight digs. Freshman Sabrina Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) chipped in seven kills and two blocks.
Brown remained within 11-10 of Penn early in set one before the Quakers used a 6-1 run to take a 17-11 edge. The Bears could pull no closer than five points the rest of the way as the hosts took the 25-16 set win. Stillwell and Tierney each had three kills in the frame while Lucenti had five digs.
In set two, the Bears again kept the score within 14-13 prior to a 6-2 spurt from Penn, which gave the hosts a 20-15 edge. Brown cut its deficit to two points at 20-18, 23-21, and 24-22, but the Quakers held on for a 25-22 win in the frame. Tierney added another three kills in the period.
Brown gained a 13-12 advantage midway through the third set, but Penn answered with a 10-1 run to gain a 22-14 lead en route to a 25-17 victory in the final stanza. Tierney charted four kills in the frame, and Cairo had six digs.
For Penn, Alexis Genske led all players with 14 kills to go with 16 digs, Courtney Quinn recorded a match-high 17 digs, and Ronnie Bither dished out a match-best 36 assists.
Next, Brown plays at Princeton tomorrow at 5 p.m. prior to completing regular season play with home matches against Dartmouth (Nov. 13, 7 p.m.) and Harvard (Nov. 14, 5 p.m.).
