
Field Hockey Earns 4-3 Non-Conference Win Over Holy Cross

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – With the score tied 3-3 midway through the second half, freshman Ellie Seid (Larchmont, N.Y.) carried the ball through the arc and beat the Holy Cross goalkeeper threw the legs with what proved to be the game-winning goal at 56:13 to power Brown to a 4-3 non-conference win on Wednesday afternoon. Senior Hannah Rogers (Los Altos, Calif.) added a strong offensive performance with two goals and one assist in the contest. The Bears move to 6-6 with the victory while Holy Cross falls to 6-8.
"Today's match was a tough fight," said head coach Jill Reeve. "I was happy with our goal scoring which has been a focus for us this week. Rachel Lanouette and Hannah Rogers played extremely well for us today. That was a well earned win against a tough competitor."
Brown opened the first half as the first team to score and took a 1-0 lead at 11:17. Rogers notched her fourth goal of the year on an unassisted shot close range.
Holy Cross tied the game at 24:38 when Emily Loprete scored her eighth goal of the year.
The Bears were quick to retaliate and regained back their lead (2-1) at 27:39 with junior Lucy Green (Providence, R.I.) registering her first goal of the season. Rogers tallied the assist on the play.
Holy Cross again knotted up the score (2-2), just before the second half with Lauren Ineson being credited with the tally.
Brown scored early in the second (39:20) to take a 3-2 lead when Rogers again scored, with Lanouette leading her with a pass to the arc.
The Crusaders scored to tie the game at three at 51:57 with Maureen Connolly recording the goal.
At 56:13, Seid registered her second game-winning goal of the season when she powered through the Crusader defense and carried the ball in for the score (4-3).
The Brown defense held strong for the remainder of the game, as Holy Cross pulled its goalie with 54 second remaining in the contest.
Freshman Katie Hammaker (Ephrata, Pa.) made five saves in net for the Bears while Megan Inch of Holy Cross made four stops.
Holy Cross had a slight advantage overall in corners (3-2) and shots (14-13).
The Bears will remain at home and next host No. 19 Princeton in an Ivy League showdown on Saturday, Oct. 17, starting at 12:00 p.m.
