CANTON, N.Y. – Sophomore goaltender Monica Elvin (Oakland, Calif.) made 42 saves and allowed just one goal, but Brown University women's ice hockey fell, 4-0, at No. 9 St. Lawrence University at Appleton Arena on Friday night.
As a team, the Bears (5-17-0, 2-13-0) totaled 58 saves and 21 blocked shots, but the Saints (15-8-3, 9-3-2) scored three goals in the second half of the first period and added a third-period goal to earn the home victory.
Earlier this season, Brown beat St. Lawrence, 7-4, in Providence, R.I., on Nov. 1 behind a five-goal third period.
Elvin (Oakland, Calif.) stopped 42 of the 43 shots she faced in 42:44, registering 17 saves in the second period and 21 in the third. She has posted 40 or more saves in two of her last three outings. Freshman Julianne Landry (Hanover, Mass.) turned aside 16 shots in 17:16.
Brown went 5-for-6 on the penalty kill, conceding only one power play goal in the first period.
The Bears bettered their fortunes in the second period, denying the Saints on all three of their power play opportunities and creating scoring chances. Elvin stopped the 17 shots she faced in the period, and Brown blocked six shots as a team.
Senior Sarah Robson (Mississauga, Ontario) nearly put the Bears on the board early in the second stanza when she sent a shot off the post. Classmate Kaitlyn Keon (Toronto, Ontario) almost scored nine minutes into the frame after receiving a pass from Robson as her bid required a kick save.
Freshman Samantha Swanstrom (Ham Lake, Minn.) sought to notch the game's first goal, but her attempt midway through the first period ricocheted off the piping.
For St. Lawrence, Jessica Hon netted the team's first goal just over 10 minutes into the opening period off assists from Hannah Miller and Amanda Boulier. Ellie Williams pushed the hosts' lead to 2-0 less than three minutes later off a feed from Alex Moore.
Jenna Marks scored SLU's third goal 17:16 into the first stanza with assistance from Boulier and Kayla Raniwsky. Boulier tallied the Saints insurance goal at the 6:02 mark of the final frame with helpers from Marks and Megan Armstrong.
Goalie Carmen MacDonald recorded 14 saves in the shutout.
Next, Brown plays at Clarkson tomorrow at 3 p.m.
