PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Nia Marshall and Nicholle Aston each posted double-doubles as the Cornell Big Red raced past the Brown women's basketball team, 65-52, on Friday at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
The Bears suffer their third consecutive Ivy League defeat to drop to 6-11 (0-3), while Cornell improves to 12-5 (3-0 Ivy) with the win.
Jordin Alexander (Fishers, Ind.) topped the Bears with 17 points, while Janie White (Clarksville, Tenn.) posted nine points and nine rebounds for the second time in three games.
Junior Ellise Sharpe (Tipp City, Ohio) also chipped in with nine points and four rebounds, with Rebecca Musgrove (Plainview, N.Y.) adding seven points and six rebounds for the Bears on Friday.
After the Big Red jumped out to an early 6-2 lead, the Bears responded on a trey from White to draw even, but a 7-1 Cornell run gave the visitors an early first half cushion. White finished the night 3-of-9 from long range and posted one block in 32 minutes of action.
The Bears struggled to contain the Ivy League's third leading scorer in Nia Marshall, who deposited 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting. Brown was held at bay for most of the half until Ellise Sharpe connected from long distance to bring Brown back within three at 27-24.
Alexander posted a team high nine points in the opening half, including a jumper in the lane to bring the Bears back within five entering the locker room.
Despite shooting just 19.4-percent from the field in the second half, the Bears drew within two possessions at 50-44 on Sharpe's free throws. Cornell's Taylor DePalma's crushing trey on the other end on the ensuing possession stalled the Brown comeback bid.
The Bears had their looks from long distance on Friday, but couldn't find the bottom of the net consistently, shooting just 5-of-28 from behind the arc.
The Big Red also got double figure performances from Kerri Moran and Megan LeDuc, who each posted 10 and 11 points respectively.
The Bears will don throwback jerseys on Saturday against Columbia as part of Brown's 250th anniversary celebration. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
