PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Rebecca Musgrove (Plainview, N.Y.) recorded her second double-double of the season as the Brown women's basketball team utilized a 44-21 second half performance to cruise past NJIT, 67-39, in a Tuesday matinee at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
The Bears conclude their non-conference slate and improve to 6-9 overall, while the Highlanders drop their third straight, falling to 8-12.
Narrowly missing out on double-doubles of their own were Janie White (Clarksville, Tenn.) and Sophie Bikofsky (Newton, Mass.). White posted nine points and nine rebounds, while Bikofsky's trio of second half treys helped the senior post a line of 15 points and eight rebounds in 26 minutes of action.
Jordin Alexander (Fishers, Ind.) helped the Brown cause with 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field.
With the 28-point margin of victory, Brown secures its most resounding win since defeating UMBC at last season's Navy Classic, 92-53.
In front of a raucous crowd of over 1,000 fans, including eight Providence area elementary schools in attendance, the Bears found their groove after a slow shooting start to grab a 16-12 on the strength of a 10-2 run over a six-minute span.
The Bears got a pivotal contribution from Musgrove early on, as the sophomore point guard sparked the offense with team high eight points and five rebounds in the opening half. She finished the afternoon with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Freshman Kennedy Martin (Los Angeles, Calif.) established her presence in the paint with back-to-back leaning shots to stabilize the Brown attack. Martin finished the day matching her career high with seven points.
With the Bears up by three in the final moments of the half, Musgrove's jumper gave Brown a 23-18 lead entering the locker room.
A 12-0 run in the opening minutes of the second half propelled to Bears to a 35-18 lead, capped off by Bikofsky's first trey of the contest to force an NJIT timeout. Brown continued the run with strong drives to the hoop from White and timely long-distance accuracy from Bikofsky that put Brown up 47-25 with 9:01 to play.
Megan Reilly's (Norwood, N.J.) jumper with under two minutes to play gave Brown its largest lead of the game at 66-31.
From there, the Bears' defense continued their day-long success over the Highlanders, stifling NJIT to just 22.6-percent shooting from the field and holding an 52-37 edge on the glass.
Brown returns to action on Friday with a rematch against Yale beginning at 7 p.m. at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Tickets for all Brown women's basketball games can be purchased online, calling the Brown Athletics Ticket Office at (401) 863-2773, or walking up to the Box Office located in the Pizzitola Sports Center, open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
