PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's basketball team got 41 combined points from Jordin Alexander and Natalie Ball, but a torrid second half shooting display led the Yale Bulldogs to a 79-69 win at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Friday night.
The Bears drop to 6-10 and 0-2 in Ivy play, while the Bulldogs evened their record to 8-8 (2-0 Ivy) with the win.
Alexander (Fishers, Ind.) paced the Bears with 21 points and six rebounds, while Ball (Orlando, Fla.) smashed her previous career high with 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field.
Sophomore point guard Rebecca Musgrove (Plainview, N.Y.) chipped in 11 points, while Janie White (Clarksville, Tenn.), Sophie Bikofsky (Newton, Mass.), and Megan Reilly (Norwood, N.J.) each posted four points for the Bears on Friday.
A see-saw affair in the first half saw five lead changes and seven deadlocks between the teams as the Bears prospered from the free throw line, cashing in on 18-of-22 attempts.
The duo of Alexander and Ball gave the Bears the quick start they needed after first half shooting woes at Yale last Friday. A solid first half performance, with help in the paint from freshman Kennedy Martin (Los Angeles, Calif.) gave Brown a 36-33 edge heading into the locker room.
In a foul-plagued contest that saw the teams combine for 47 fouls and 67 free throws, it was the visiting Bulldogs that caught fire in the second half, shooting 66.7-percent from the field (14-21) to rally against the Bears, who held a three-point halftime cushion.
Lena Munzer's trey with 14:34 to play gave Yale the lead for good, while Emmy Allen's 17 points surged the visitors to a seven-point lead on her put back with six minutes to play.
The Brown rally wasn't enough, despite the efforts of Alexander, as the junior drew contact and scored to draw the Bears within six at 63-57 with 4:42 to play.
Crucial free throws down the stretch sealed the game for the Bulldogs and denied Brown any hopes of a rally.
Yale (24-32, .750) and Brown (29-35, .829) both excelled from the charity stripe on Friday.
Brown returns to action next Friday for the first of six Ivy League doubleheaders. On Friday, Brown battles Cornell before hosting Columbia on Saturday.
