
Yale Takes Down Brown, 80-62, In Ivy League Opener

Providence, R.I. - Brown and Yale opened Ivy League play Saturday afternoon with the Bulldogs coming away with a 80-62 win over the Bears at the Pizzitola Sports Center behind senior Javier Duran's 19 points.
Yale improves to 12-6, 1-0 Ivy with the win, while Brown falls to 9-9 overall, 0-1 in Ivy play. The two teams will play again next Saturday in New Haven.
"This was a good, old fashioned beat down," said Brown head coach Mike Martin. "Yale out-played us in every facet of the game and did a really good job of getting the ball in the paint. Yale is a veteran team, who is very well coached.
"We have to do better with our offensive and defensive execution," added Martin. "I'm confident we can respond."
Duran scored 15 of his game high 19 points in the opening half as the Bulldogs built a 47-31 lead at intermission. He also grabbed 10 rebounds to complete the double-double.
Jack Montague had 10 of his 15 points in the second half for Yale, hitting an array of treys and lay-ups. Junior All-Ivy forward Justin Sears also scored 15 points, while pulling down a team high 11 rebounds and blocking five shots.
Sophomore forward Leland King paced the Bears with 18 points, while grabbing seven rebounds.
Despite early foul trouble, Bears' senior forward Rafael Maia responded by scoring 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field, and completed his second double-double of the season with a game high rebounds. He also had three steals.
"Raf is a great leader, our hardest worker and toughest player," said Martin.
In a foul marred game, Brown was whistled for 27 fouls, with Yale being called for 18 fouls. The Bulldogs connected on 23-of-37 free throws, while Brown converted 11-of-18 free throw attempts. Yale also had a decided advantage on the backboards, out-rebounding the Bears by a 45-37 margin.
After falling behind early, 15-10, Brown outscored the Bulldogs, 10-1, to pull ahead by a 20-16 margin on a lay-up by junior Cedric Kuakumensah midway through the opening 20 minutes.
A layup by sophomore guard Tavon Blackmon gave Brown its last lead of the half, 25-24, with 7:17 remaining. The Bulldogs answered with a 13-2 spurt, capped off by a Montague trey, to grab a 37-27 lead with just 2:22 remaining.
Yale continued to pressure the Bears and out-scored Brown, 10-3, to close out the half and gain a 47-31 halftime advantage. Duran netted five points for Yale in the spurt.
Brown and Yale will have face each other again next Saturday, January 24, with the Bears traveling to New Haven, Connecticut, to battle the Bulldogs. Tip-off is 2:00 pm. at Payne Whitney Gymnasium.
