
Brown Falls To Yale, 69-65, On Basket In Last Seconds

New Haven, Ct. - Senior guard Javier Duren scored 24 points, including the game-winning basket with 3.6 seconds remaining, to lift Yale to a 69-65 Ivy League win over Brown at Payne Whitney Gymnasium. Yale improves to 13-6 overall, 2-0 in Ivy play, while Brown falls to 9-10, 0-2 in Ivy play.
Bears' senior forward Rafael Maia tied the game, 63-63, when he followed a missed Tavon Blackmon shot with a layup at 1:07 left on the clock.
Justin Sears hit two free throws with 24.9 seconds remaining to put the Bulldogs up by two points, 65-63. Blackmon answered with a floater to tie the game, 65-65, with just 18 seconds remaining.
Duran held the ball on the right side of the court before elevating for the game-winning 15-foot jump shot, giving Yale a 67-65 advantage. Two late free throws by Sears accounted for the final score.
It was a game of attrition, with four players fouling out, two from each team, and 54 fouls whistled in the game. The Bears out-rebounded Yale by a 34-31 margin.
"Yale two best players – Sears and Duren – played well for 40 minutes and made huge plays," said Brown head coach Mike Martin. "We kept fighting, working and playing hard. In the end, we just made one less play."
Maia played like a warrior for the Bears, scoring 18 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field, while pulling down nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Steven Spieth did most of his damage from the free throw line for the Bears, connecting on 13-of-14 shots from the charity stripe, while grabbing eight rebounds.
Blackmon also scored in double figures for the Bears with 15 points, while handing out four assists.
Sears led all scorers with 27 points and nine rebounds. He connected on 8-of-14 field goals and 11-of-19 free throws. Duren had his 24 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field and connected on 8-of-10 free throws.
The Bears got off to a shaky start, hitting just 2 of their first 12 shots from the field, to fall behind, 11-4, with 11:30 left in the opening half. A 9-2 run put Brown back in the game, evening the score, 13-13, following two free throws by sophomore forward Cedric Kuakumensah.
Spieth gave Brown its first lead, 17-16, on two free throws at the 6:41 mark. The Bears extended their lead to six points, 27-21, with 3:10 left on two more Spieth free throws.
Blackmon lifted Brown its largest lead of the opening half, 31-24, on a two free throws with 51-seconds left, before the Bears settled on a 31-25 halftime advantage.
The game settled down to a dogfight in the final 20 minutes. There were five second half lead changes before the Bulldogs built a 51-46 lead after two free throws by Spears.
JR Hobbie's trey for the Bears with the shot clock running down and 5:04 remaining cut Yale's lead to 56-55. Maia connected on two free throws to lift Brown to a 57-56 lead with 4:30 left.
Armani Cotton gave the Bulldogs a 61-59 lead on a trey with 2:15 left, but Blackmon's driving lay-up tied the score at 61-61.
Brown makes a tour of the Empire State next week, first traveling to Ithaca, NY to face Cornell on Friday, January 30, at 7pm, and then on to New York City to battle Columbia on Saturday, January 31 at 7pm. Both games will be broadcast on the Ivy League Digital Network.
