Providence, R.I. – In Brown's final tune-up before the start of Ivy League play on Saturday, sophomore Leland King scored 19 points and pulled down a career high 16 rebounds to lead Brown to an 88-42 non-league win over Lyndon State Monday evening at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
Brown improves to 9-8 overall, while Lyndon State falls to 3-9. With the win, Brown tied the school record for non-league victories held by its 2001-02 team (9-4) with head coach Mike Martin '04.
The Bears also became the fourth team in Brown history to post a winning non-league record. Martin has now played a role in three of the four winning non-league seasons, first as a player in 2001-02, and now as a coach in 2013-14 and 2014-15.
"We're excited that we have league play coming up on Saturday, and I'm extremely pleased with the way we played tonight," said Martin. "Our effort and energy was strong tonight and we had several advantages over Lyndon State, especially inside with Raf (Maia), Leland and Dockery (Walker) on the boards."
Brown led from start-to-finish and broke the game open with a first half surge. Leading, 13-8, at the 13:24 mark of the opening half, Brown out-scored the Hornets, 23-4, to grab a 36-12 lead on a layup by King with 3:14 remaining and take control of the game.
In a dominating performance in the paint, Brown out-rebounded the Hornets by a 59-28 margin, with three Bears pulling down double-digit rebounds.
King connected on 7-of-8 field goals in scoring 19 points and pulled down 11 of his 16 rebounds in the first half alone. He also handed out a career high six assists in his pursuit of a triple-double.
A trio of Brown sophomores also scored in double figures for the Bears. Steven Spieth registered 12 points and grabbed four rebounds, sophomore guard JR Hobbie had 12 points, all on treys, and guard Tavon Blackmon had 11 points and five assists. Freshman Patrick Triplett tossed in a career high 11 points.
While senior forward Rafael Maia didn't score in double figures for the Bears, he tossed in nine points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Senior Dockery Walker also had a big game with seven points and 11 rebounds. Senior center Jon Schmidt saw his first action of the season, contributing two points and five rebounds
Lyndon State was led by David Johnson with 18 points.
The 14-game Ivy League Playoffs tips-off next Saturday, January 17, when Brown hosts Yale at the Pizzitola Sports Center in a matinee match-up, starting at 2:00 p.m. The Ivy League is the only conference in the country that does not have a post-season tournament and determines its champion through regular season play.
