SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Freshman Sam Donovan tipped home a point shot from senior Lauren Vella with 1:29 remaining, but Brown University women's ice hockey could not find an equalizer in the final 89 seconds in a 3-2 setback at Union College on Saturday evening at Messa Rink.
The Bears (4-9-0, 1-5-0 ECAC) netted their third-period goal with an extra attacker and placed three more shots on goal in the final minute, but the Dutchwomen (3-11-2, 1-5-0 ECAC) held on for the win.
Senior Kaitlyn Keon (Toronto, Ontario) won the puck in the corner and slid it to Vella (Staten Island, N.Y.) who sent a shot on goal, which Donovan (New Brighton, Minn.) redirected for her seventh goal of the season to give life to the visitors.
Junior Ariana Rucker (Oakton, Va.) tallied Brown's first goal of the game on the power play to tie the score at 1-1 at the 13:13 mark of the second period. Donovan provided the primary assist on the play while sophomore Maddie Woo (Plymouth, Minn.) posted the secondary assist – her fifth point in the last three games.
Union scored all three of its goals in the second stanza beginning with a tally from Alex Tancrell-Fontaine on the power play 5:53 into the period. Rebecca Babiak gave the hosts a 2-1 lead at the 14:34 mark of the frame. Hannah Erickson notched the eventual game-winning goal with just over two minutes remaining in the middle period.
Brown sophomore goaltender Monica Elvin (Oakland, Calif.) made 25 saves while Union net-minder Shenae Lundberg stopped 28 shots in the win.
Brown edged its opponent in shots for the second game in a row, outshooting Union, 30-28. The Bears led RPI in shots last night, 32-28.
Keon and classmate Sarah Robson (Mississauga, Ontario) each played in her 100th career game in the contest.
Next, Brown enters its winter break before resuming play with home games against Harvard on Jan. 2 at 7 p.m. and Dartmouth on Jan. 3 at 4 p.m.
