PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's swimming and diving team ushered in a new era with a 136-107 victory over Northeastern on Friday afternoon at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
First-year Head Coach Kate Kovenock was encouraged by the team's initial performance on Friday.
"After 5 straight weeks of training it was great to get up and race against another team," said Kovenock. "I definitely saw some things I am excited about in the big picture - from specific individuals and also in how we worked together as a cohesive unit. Hitting the road tomorrow morning for a dual meet versus UMass will be a great test of how resilient and gritty our women are right now. I am looking forward to it."
After the Huskies claimed the day's initial event, the 200 Yard Medley Relay, the Bears claimed the next three events in resounding fashion as Elly Vitek (Western Springs, Ill.) triumphed in the 1000 Yard Freestyle with a time of 10:36.79. Kate Dillione (Newtown, Pa.) and freshman Aja Grande (Honolulu, Hawaii) scored victories in the 200 and 50 Yard Freestyle, respectively.
Gina Matsumoto (Farmington Hills, Mich.) scored a win in the 200 Yard Fly with a time of 2:06.45, before the Bears swept the top-three slots in the 100 Yard Freestyle thanks to Dillione, Reia Tong (Bethesda, Md.), and Sarah Cronin (Westfield, N.J.).
Vitek tallied her second win of the afternoon with a 5:09.95 mark in the 500 Yard Freestyle, before Amanda Molinelli (Greenwich, Conn.) scored Brown's best diving mark of the afternoon, a score of 251.56 in the three-meter event.
The Bears closed out their first win of 2014-15 with a time of 3:26.63 in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay, powered by performances from Grande, Cronin, Tong, and Dillione.
Brown returns to action tomorrow for an early afternoon meet at UMass beginning at noon.
