ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Brown University men's water polo head coach Felix Mercado has earned CWPA Northern Division Coach of the Year honors while seniors Henry Fox and Nick Deaver and junior Will Klein have gained All-North accolades, the Collegiate Water Polo Association announced on Friday.
In his eighth year at Brown, Mercado has now garnered Northern Division Coach of the Year recognition from the CWPA for the fifth time. He gained the honor on the men's side in 2007 in his first season with the Bears and in 2006 at MIT. He won the award on the women's side in both 2008 and 2009.
Fox (Mercer Island, Wash.) and Klein (Pasadena, Calif.) each claimed First Team All-North laurels while Deaver (Orinda, Calif.) took home Second Team All-North plaudits. Fox captured first team honors for the third consecutive season. He was also the CWPA Northern Division's Rookie of the Year and a second team all-league selection in 2011.
Entering this weekend's CWPA Championship, Fox has led the team with 65 goals on the season. He has also posted 38 assists, 50 steals, and 30 ejections drawn while converting on 66 percent (28 of 42) of his 6-on-5 attempts.
Klein has drawn a team-high 103 ejections on the year and has added 37 goals, 13 steals, and two assists. Deaver has paced the squad with 59 steals while also contributing 49 goals, 40 assists, and 12 ejections drawn.
This fall, Brown won its first Northern Division championship since 2009 and qualified as the top seed at the CWPA Championship.
The Bears open play at the CWPA Championship today at 3:20 p.m. against No. 8 seed George Washington.
