PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Junior Will Cross (Nashville, Tenn.) knocked in a header late in the first half to even the score, and the two teams battled to a draw the rest of the way, as the Brown men's soccer team tied Penn, 1-1, on Saturday evening at Rhodes Field.
Brown moves to 4-5-6 on the season and 1-2-2 in Ivy League play, while the Quakers now stand at 8-7-2 on the season and 2-1-1 in the conference.
Senior Mitch Kupstas (Suwanee, Ga.) made four saves in net for the Bears, while Max Polkinhorne recorded eight stops for the Quakers. Brown and Penn tied in shots, 15-15, but the Quakers held an edge in corner kicks, 10-5.
After a handball by Brown gave Penn a penalty shot, Duke Lacroix converted the kick at 18:09 to move the home side in front, 1-0.
Penn continued to press offensively throughout the opening half, outshooting the Bears by a 10-4 margin, but the visitors responded late in the stanza to even the score. After junior Jack Gorab (Newport Beach, Calif.) launched a corner kick into the box, Cross stepped up and headed home the equalizer for his third tally of the season. Cross converted a header into the back of the net for the second time in as many games, as he scored the game-winner in overtime to lift Brown over UNH earlier in the week.
Brown outshot the Quakers in the second half by a 7-4 margin and the two teams traded scoring opportunities throughout the stanza. Brown had four shots in the final 10 minutes of regulation, but Penn staved off the attack to force overtime. Polkinhorne made two more stops in overtime, turning away shots by Gorab and Tariq Akeel (Rochester Hills, Mich.) to keep the game tied.
Brown returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 8 for Senior Day when the Bears host Yale at 4 p.m.
