PRINCETON, N.J. – Five members of the Brown University men's soccer team earned All-Ivy honors in a vote by the Ivy League's eight head coaches, announced by the league office Wednesday afternoon.
Junior midfielder Jack Gorab (Newport Beach, Calif.) earned First Team All-Ivy recognition, while seniors Ben Maurey (Downington, Pa.) and Alex Markes (Valencia, Calif.) picked up Second Team honors. In addition, junior Tim Whalen (Amston, Conn.) and Tariq Akeel (Rochester Hills, Mich.) earned All-Ivy Honorable Mention accolades.
Gorab, who earned All-Ivy honors for the first time in his career, started all 16 games during the season for the Bears. He tied for the team lead with 10 points, and led the way with six assists to go along with a pair of goals. Gorab notched double-digit points for the second time in as many seasons after starting 16 games as a sophomore last year.
Maurey returned to the Brown lineup in 2014 after missing nearly all of last season due to injury, and provided an offensive presence with a team-high four goals, including a pair of game-winning tallies against Columbia and Yale. He also added a pair of assists for 10 points on the season. Maurey previously earned First Team All-Ivy honors as a sophomore in 2012 after leading the Bears with 12 points.
Markes gained All-Ivy recognition for the second straight season after he was named Honorable Mention in 2013. After missing the first four games due to injury, Markes returned to help solidify the Bears defense, helping the team to four straight shutouts in his first four starts of the season. He was also named a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award, a national award that recognizes excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
Whalen, a first time All-Ivy selection, has been a consistent anchor on the backline for the Bears over the last two seasons, starting all 33 games played during that span. He led the team in minutes played this season and also added an assist. Akeel was named All-Ivy for the second straight season after posting a pair of goals in 16 games played, including the game winner over Boston University.
