Fencing Goes 8-1 at Season-Opening Northeast Fencing Conference Meet

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Brown University fencing went 8-1 as a team – with the women's team going 5-0 and the men's side finishing 3-1 – at the team's season-opening Northeast Fencing Conference meet hosted by MIT at the Johnson Athletic Center.
The women went 5-0 for the second straight year with victories over New Hampshire, Wellesley, Sacred Heart, Boston University, and UMass Amherst. The men's side defeated New Hampshire, Boston University, and UMass Amherst while falling to Sacred Heart.
The Bears women's team opened the day with a 24-6 victory over New Hampshire with squad wins from foil (9-0) and sabre (9-0). Following that win, the Bears beat Wellesley 23-4 with foil and sabre each taking 9-0 squad wins.
In the afternoon, the women topped Sacred Heart 15-12 in its closes contest of the day thank to squad wins from foil (6-3) and sabre (6-3). The Brown women closed the day with triumphs over Boston University, 24-3, and UMass Amherst, 26-1.
The men's team began action at the event with a 26-1 victory over New Hampshire behind squad wins from foil (8-1), epee (9-0), and sabre (9-0). The Bears fell to Sacred Heart 14-13 but out-scored Boston University 24-3, with all three squads claiming victories, and UMass Amherst 22-6 with foil (9-0) and eppe (8-1) winning.
In women's foil, freshman Clarissa Allen (Newtown, Pa.) went 12-0, junior Audrey Lee (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) went 12-1, and senior Hannah Kolus (Burbank, Calif.) finished 11-2. In women's epee, freshman Signe Ferguson (Wilmington, Del.) went 7-3, sophomore Sasha De Lotbiniere (New York, N.Y.) finished 5-1, and sophomore Phoebe McAuliffe (Setauket, N.Y.) went 3-1.
The women's sabre squad enjoyed a banner day behind a 13-1 effort from senior Christine Whalen (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and a 10-2 mark from sophomore Clara Tondato Da Ruos (Milan, Italy). Three other members of the squad went undefeated as senior Samantha Gross (Newton, Mass.), junior Lauren Altman (New York, N.Y.), and junior Stephanie Hojsak (Tenafly, N.J.) went 7-0, 6-0, and 6-0 respectively.
In men's foil, senior Barrett Weiss (Barrington, R.I.) notched an undefeated day with a 9-0 record while junior Kyle Kennedy (Wall, N.J.) went 9-1, and sophomore David Adler (Bellevue, Wash.) finished 7-1. For men's epee, freshman Ryan Connor (Lincoln, R.I.) went 8-0, sophomore James Yoon (Austin, Texas) finished 9-2, and junior Simon Jones (Louisville, Colo.) went 7-2. In men's sabre sophomore Alex Palabrica (Los Angeles, Calif.) registered an 8-1 mark and sophomore Carlos Rotger (Melrose, Mass.) tallied a 5-2 record.
Next, Brown competes at the Penn State Open from Nov. 22-23.
