HAMDEN, Conn. – Alexis Miller tied the game up early in the second half for the Brown field hockey team, but it wasn't enough as the Bears fell to Quinnipiac, 3-1, on Wednesday afternoon at the QU Turf Complex. Brown falls to 6-3 overall while the Bobcats improve to 4-7 with the win.
"We fought hard as a team for 70 minutes and created a lot of chances," said Head Coach Jill Reeve. "Emma Quigley and Katherine Kallergis provided a much needed spark from the bench which helped us put together a great second half effort."
Despite a 5-1 edge in penalty corners in the opening half, the Bears couldn't solve Conaboy and a stout Bobcats defense, managing just two shots on goal from Liza Green (Providence, R.I.) and Miller (Caldwell, N.J.). Green's shot found its way around Conaboy, but Lily Shemo's desperation defensive stop thwarted the Brown attack.
Quinnipiac tallied the lone goal of the half just three minutes into the contest as Danielle Allan put home a rebound off a shot from Savanna Reilly for her sixth tally of the season.
Brown cashed in early in the second half off a corner as Miller deposited her fourth marker of the season on assists from Emily Arciero (Avon, Conn.) and Haley Alvarez (Martinsville, N.J.). The junior midfielder's goal at the 47:23 mark elevated her to second on the team in goals behind Meghan O'Donnell's seven strikes.
The deadlocked game didn't last long as the Bobcats responded swiftly as Angie King redirected Megan Osanitsch's shot past McSweeney at 51:08. Freshman Katherine Kallergis (Lake Forest, Ill.) seemed primed to notch the equalizer at 63:11, but her stroke found the crossbar and stayed out to keep the one-goal deficit.
With Lucy Green booked for a green card, the Bobcats took advantage and added insurance on Savanna Reilly's third goal of the season with just 3:20 to play.
Brown returns home this weekend for doubleheader action versus Lehigh (Sun.) and Providence (Mon.) at Goldberger Family Field.
