PROVIDENCE, R.I. – League-leading goal scorer Marisa Siergiej tallied two goals, including what proved to be the game-winner just 1:52 into the contest to lift Cornell to a 3-0 win over the Brown field hockey team on Saturday at Goldberger Family Field.
The Big Red (9-4, 4-1 Ivy) maintained its lead atop the league standings with the shutout victory over the Bears (9-5, 1-4 Ivy) on Saturday.
"I was proud of the way we played today, we had our chances and weren't able to capitalize on them," said Head Coach Jill Reeve. "When we played our style, we created so much. We'll need to upgrade our finish in the upcoming games."
A tough call against the Bears at the 1:52 mark set up Siergiej for a penalty stroke that the junior fired home to right side of the goal to put Cornell up 1-0. After the Big Red's initial surge, Brown settled in with a couple of good looks off corners from New Jersey natives, Alexis Miller and Clayton Christus. Both bids were turned away by Big Red goalkeeper Kelly Johnson, who recorded her second solo shutout of the season to improve to 6-2.
Brown defender Anna Masini (Ann Arbor, Mich.) kept Cornell from extending its lead with a sparkling defensive save against Sam McILwrick, batting a goal-bound shot out of mid-air.
The Big Red's early push in the second half paid dividends as Siergiej struck again for her league-leading 13th goal of the season off an assist from Taylor Standiford. Siergiej finished the contest with a game-high five shots on goal.
Katy Weeks accounted for the final Cornell marker at the 53:58 mark as she capitalized off a Brown turnover and fired a low shot into the right corner to push the Big Red's lead to 3-0.
A stout Cornell defense limited the Bears to just seven shots, with only three of those attempts on target.
Shannon McSweeney (Boxborough, Mass.) made four saves to drop to 9-5 overall as the Bears dropped just their second contest at Goldberger Family Field in 2014.
Brown returns to action next weekend for a two-day trip to Philadelphia to battle Penn (Sat.) and Saint Joseph's (Sun).
