PHILADELPHIA – Sophomore Lucy Green tied things up midway through the first half, but the Bears (9-6) couldn't solve Penn netminder Allison Weisenfels the rest of the way in a 2-1 Quakers (8-7) win on a rainy Saturday at Ellen Vegelos Field.
"We created more opportunities today, unfortunately we weren't able to capitalize when we needed to," said Head Coach Jill Reeve. "I felt that Alexis Miller, Anna Masini, and Haley Alvarez really stepped up today and created a lot of positive plays."
Elizabeth Hitti's marker at the 3:18 mark put the Bears in an early hole, but Green (Providence, R.I.) responded 57 seconds later to knot the game at one. Off a corner play, Green took a feed from Emily Arciero (Avon, Conn.) and deposited it past Weisenfels to deadlock the game at one.
The Bears stormed the Penn defensive zone in the opening half, landing seven shots on target, four combined from Meghan O'Donnell (Winchester, Mass.) and Jaclyn Torres (Andover, Mass.).
Penn converted on one of their few opportunities on goal to take the lead for good at the 18:13 junction on Elise Tilton's tap in from the right side of the net.
Brown limited Penn's chances in a stout defensive effort, only allowing 3-of-10 attempts to find their way on goal. Goalkeeper Shannon McSweeney (Boxborough, Mass.) made one save to drop to 9-6 this season.
The second half was more of the same as the Bears continued to push the pace and control play, but once again were foiled by the efforts of Weisenfels, as the senior goalkeeper turned away 15 shots to improve to 8-6 overall.
Bids from Clayton Christus (Bernardsville, N.J.), Alexis Miller (Caldwell, N.J.), Hannah Rogers (Los Altos, Calif.), Arciero, and O'Donnell in the final 15 minutes of play were all denied by Weisenfels as the Bears desperately sought the equalizer.
A late green card on the Penn bench with 20 seconds to play gave the Bears one last gasp, but the Quakers were able to survive as Brown drops to 1-5 in Ivy League play.
Brown returns to action tomorrow at noon for the second leg of its Philadelphia trip at Saint Joseph's.
