PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Erin Conway scored in the third period, but Brown University women's hockey fell to the Rochester Institute of Technology, 4-1, in its season opener at Meehan Auditorium on Friday night.
The Tigers (4-2-1) netted two goals in the first period, one in the second stanza, and one in the third frame before Conway (Jackson, Mich.) put the Bears (0-1-0) on the board.
On the Bears' scoring play, junior Kelly Micholson (Grove Village, Ill.) moved the puck from the top of the left faceoff circle down to senior Sarah Robson (Mississauga, Ontario). Robson then found Conway in the slot, and she sent the puck to the back of the net during five-on-three play.
"In the third period we trapped them in their zone for the first four minutes and went on to score a great power play goal," Brown head coach Amy Bourbeau said. "Tomorrow we are looking to make the most of our offensive chances and iron out our defensive zone play."
For RIT, Mackenzie Stone and Kolbee McCrea each recorded a goal and an assist while Darcy Henderson and Lindsay Grigg each added a single tally.
Brown sophomore goaltender Monica Elvin (Oakland, Calif.) made 26 saves in the loss while RIT net-minder Ali Binnington stopped 23 shots to improve to 4-2-0 on the season.
McCrea opened the game's scoring for the Tigers just less than four minutes into the game as Stone corralled the puck to the right of the net and fed McCrea just in front of the goal.
The visitors doubled their edge to 2-0 at the 15:36 mark of the first frame as Henderson capitalized on a loose puck in front of the crease.
RIT went up 3-0 as McCrea won the puck in the corner for Stone who attacked the goal from the right and slipped a shot past Elvin. Grigg made it 4-0 after she intercepted a pass in the Tigers' offensive zone.
"We played hard but we didn't win the battles in the defensive zone corners," Bourbeau said. "We need to do a better job of picking people up in front of our net as well."
Robson and senior Brittany Moorehead (Clinton, N.Y.) each registered a game-high six shots.
Brown won 35 of the game's 50 face-offs. RIT led in shots 30-24.
Next, Brown hosts RIT again tomorrow at 4 p.m.
