CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – After an impressive opening day by the Brown freshmen eight, the Bears returned to water for the elite Championship 8 event on Sunday in the final day of competition at the 50th anniversary Head of the Charles Regatta in Cambridge, Mass.
Brown entered two boats to the Champion 8, the highest level of competition at the prestigious event, made up of participating schools as well as international crews, including some all-star composite boats constructed from the best rowers in the world.
The varsity boat finished 12th overall, just ahead of Northeastern University, while the second varsity boat took 21st overall. The Brown Alumni boat also competed and turned in a 34th-palce finish.
The Brown freshmen eight boat picked up a second-place finish in the Men's Club 8 event on Saturday. The Brown eight-man boat, composed entirely of athletes in their first year rowing at Brown, came down the course with crews from Northeastern, Harvard and Boston University on their heels. The race was hotly contested with no clear indication on which boat navigated the 4,800-meter course in the fastest time. After the event, the results indicated that Brown had finished second, just 4.8 seconds behind the entry from Northeastern.
Brown's second entry in the Club event also had a strong showing despite having to deal with significant boat traffic issues during the race, and moved up from their 17th place starting position to finish 10th in the event.
In the Alumni 8 event on Saturday, composed entirely of graduates from their respective universities, the entry from Brown also finished second, just two seconds behind Northeastern.
Brown returns to action on Sunday, Nov. 23 when the Bears compete at the Foot of the Charles.
