Men's Crew Opens Season at Head of the Housatonic

DERBY, Conn. – The Brown men's crew returned to the water in impressive fashion on Saturday as the freshmen kicked off the fall season with a first-place finish at the Head of the Housatonic on the Housatonic River.
Brown raced two freshman eights as both boats competed in the Collegiate Novice Men's 8+ race. Brown first boat was victorious in a time of 13:64, beating out tough crews from Yale, Columbia and Williams, while the second boat place third overall in a time of 15:45 and was made up of all walk-on rowers, marking the fastest true novice boat in the field.
The 1F was coxed by Benson Stevens, and included oarsmen Rich Caputo, Viggo Hoite, Jeremy Amram, Russell Dodd, Grant Bitler, Andrew Thomson, Elijah Engelke and Jonathan Dow. The 2F was coxed by Samir Gadre, with oarsmen Yannick Alphonso-Gibbs, Lucas Johns, Ben Giampetroni, Drew Meldrum, Brandon Kingrey, Joseph Johnson, Brian Hasegawa and Luke Bouchard.
Brown returns to action next week when the Bear compete at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, marking the 50th anniversary of the event. Brown will be racing two entries on Saturday in the Men's Club 8 starting at 2:07 p.m., and two entries in the Men's Championship 8 on Sunday at 2:03 p.m. For more information, visit HOCR.org.
