PITTSBURGH, PA – Brown University incoming recruit Kevin Roy (Lac-Beauport, QUE) was chosen by the Anaheim Ducks in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, held June 22-23 at the Consol Energy Center, host to the 2013 Frozen Four. Roy was selected in the fourth round with the 97th overall pick. He is the second Bears' player to be drafted in as many years after rising junior captain Dennis Robertson (Fort St. John, BC) was drafted by Toronto in the 6th round (173rd overall) of the 2011 draft.
"What a wonderful day and accomplishment for Kevin," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "The Brown Hockey Family is ecstatic that Kevin was drafted and has progressed ever closer to one day playing in the NHL. We are so proud of Kevin and look forward to him donning the Brown jersey in the 2012-2013 season."
Recently named to Team Canada for the upcoming Canada-Russia Challenge, Roy is among a class of seven talented newcomers, who will enter Brown this fall. He spent the 2011-12 season with the Lincoln Stars (USHL), where we was named USHL Player of the Year, Forward of the Year, and was selected to the All-USHL First Team and the All-USHL Rookie Team. A selection and participant in the 2012 USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game, Roy also was invited to and participated in the 2012 NHL Central Scouting Combine. Roy put together a record-breaking 2011-12 season, leading the USHL in scoring with 54 regular-season goals and 104 points (54g, 50a), the most in USHL Tier 1 (2002-present) history and the most by a USHL player in over 20 years. He also had a +44 rating to lead the USHL this season and helped to lead the Stars to a 38-18-4 record and a first place finish in the USHL Western Conference. Prior to his record-breaking season in the USHL, Roy played at Deerfield Academy (2009-11), notching 62 points (31g, 31a) in 52 career games.
It was a big year for college hockey with 68 current/future college hockey players getting selected in the 2012 draft, which is the most since 74 were taken in 2007. 27 of 30 NHL teams selected at least one NCAA player.
Roy is one of 10 players with ties to ECAC Hockey, joining Matt Beattie (Yale '16), Tim Boyle (Union '16), James de Haas (Clarkson '16), Shayne Gostisbehere (Union '15), Brian Hart (Harvard '16), John McCarron (Cornell '15), Joakim Ryan (Cornell '15), Jimmy Vesey (Harvard '16), Reece Wilcox (Cornell '16)
