No. 5 Brown Men's JV8 Edges No. 12 BU
4/2/2011 12:00:00 AM | Men's Crew
Boston, Mass. — Despite some tough racing weather conditions, No. 5 Brown men's crew headed up to the Charles Rive to take on No. 12 Boston University. Bruno saw its JV8 boat edge BU by 1.2 seconds, but its Varsity eight and Freshman 8 boats came up just short.
Conditions were rough on the Charles River with both crews battling a strong headwind and whitecaps in the first half of the 2,000-meter racecourse.
In the Varsity 8, Brown took an early lead, but by the midpoint of the race, BU had taken a hold of the lead. Brown could not seem to get the strokes it wanted in the second half of the race and came up short, finishing just over six seconds behind the Terriers.
Brown's second Varsity 8 came away with the Bear's lone victory on the day. The boat had trouble with wind early, but regrouped and kept a good rhythm throughout the race, never trailing, for the win.
"Our junior varsity boat put on a very gutsy performance," said head Paul Cooke. "There were some tough conditions out there, especially with some strong wind, but the team kept a good focus throughout, and came away with the win."
The freshman 8 had a tough race against a very strong BU boat. Boston University put up an impressive time of 6:49.0 to take the victory.
The Bears will be back in action next weekend when they head back to Massachusetts to take on Harvard.
