Brown Varsity 8 Tops Yale in Season Opener

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Brown men's crew opened its 2011 Spring season at home on the Seekonk River on Saturday afternoon, taking on Ivy League rival Yale. The Bears' varsity 8 and freshmen 8 boats were both victorious.
The Bears picked up their first win of the day in the third race as the rookie boat topped its counterparts by just over a second, finishing in 6:12.76. Yale's freshmen crossed the finish line in 6:13.78.
In a tightly contested final race of the day, the Varsity 8's put on quite a show. It went down to the final few meters and Brown narrowly edged the Bulldogs by fractions of a second. The Bears posted the fastest time of the day, finishing in 5:45.54, while Yale crossed in 5:45.97.
Brown will be back in action next weekend when they travel up to Boston, Mass., to take on BU.
