Penn Overtakes Brown, 70-62

Providence, Rhode Island - Senior Tyler Bernardini scored 15 of his game high 26 points in the first half to lead Penn to a 70-62 Ivy League victory over Brown at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Penn extends its record to 10-12 overall with the win, 4-4 in the Ivy League, while Brown falls to 9-14, 2-7 in league play.
Brown welcomed the return of senior forward Peter Sullivan, its 11th all-time leading scorer, who missed the Bears' last five games with a shoulder injury. Wearing protective padding, Sullivan scored a game high 16 points for the Bears, connecting on 7 of 9 field goals.
Freshman Sean McGonagill also registered a game high 16 points for Brown, while adding five assists and four rebounds. Sophomore Tucker Halpern tossed in 13 points on four treys, and grabbed a team high six rebounds for the Bears.
Most of Bernardini's 26 points came via the trey, connecting on 6 of 8 shots from behind the three-point arc. He hit 10 of 17 field goals overall and pulled down seven rebounds. Junior Zack Rosen also scored in double figures for the Quakers with 19 points.
In a tightly played first half, Brown dug itself an early hole, falling behind by 10 points, 28-18, following a trey by Quakers' senior Jack Eggleston with 2:34 left in the half. A trey by Bears' freshman Sean McGonagill with 50 seconds left cut Penn's halftime lead to 28-21.
The Quakers scored the first seven points of the second half to pull ahead, 35-21, after a lay-up by Mike Howlett. Brown answered immediately with a 16-4 run that cut the Quakers lead to two points, 39-37, following a McGonagill trey with 12:30 left in the game. Halpern had nine points in the Brown run, all on treys.
McGonagill's two free throws with 4:36 remaining gave the Bears their last lead of the game, 51-50.
Penn took the lead for good, 53-51, on a trey by trey by Bernardini, sparking a 15-4 Quaker run that led to a 66-54 advantage with 1:09 left to play.
Brown is back in action again on Saturday night against first place Princeton. Game time is 6:00 p.m. at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
