Providence, RI- Senior co-captain Gordon Hood (Carlsbad, CA) led the Brown men's water polo team with four goals, but it wasn't enough to defeat the Bucknell Bison as the squad fell 13-9 at the Bucknell Invitational on Saturday evening.
"This was our first real test of the season and it showed," said Head Coach Felix Mercado. "I felt that Bucknell set the tone and we did not respond. We will learn from this and continue to get better."
The Bison shut down the Bears for the first time this season jumping out to a 3-0 lead after the first eight minutes, and was able to score two more unanswered goals before Corey Schwartz scored with 4:16 left in the second. Bruno went on to score two more that quarter, two in the third and four in the fourth, but could not recover from its early deficit as Bucknell held on for the win.
Offensively, the Bears were led by Hood's four goals, and also by Ryan Gladych who drew eight ejections. However, the Bears went just 2-for-15 on power players and were able to convert three penalty shots to put their player advantage at 5-for-18.
Brown played the final two quarters without their top two scorers in James McNamara and Svetozar Stefanovic, who were ejected from the game early in the second quarter.
In goal, Walker Shockley played 32 minutes and recorded a career-high eight saves. Also adding goals for Brown was Marcus Gartner, Toby Espinosa, Schwartz, Cyrus Mojdehi and Brandon Yoshimura.
