PROVIDENCE, RI - Victoria DiMartino scored her first of two
goals just 2:13 into the game and the Eagles never looked back as
#16 Boston College (3-0-0) earned a 5-0 victory over the Brown
women's soccer team (0-1-0) in the Bears' season opener on Friday
evening at Stevenson Field. For the Eagles, it was their third
straight shutout, as they have outscored their opposition, 12-0, in
their first three games of the year.
DiMartino's goal came after two shot attempts by the Eagles were
blocked by the Brown defense. The rebound after the second attempt
bounced out to Hannah Cerrone. Cerrone chipped the ball back into
DiMartino, who beat senior Brenna Hogue (Concord, CA) to the left
side for what would prove to be the game-winning goal.
DiMartino added to BC's lead at 21:47 when she scored an unassisted
goal from the top right of the box on an Eagles' restart.
Boston College held an 18-2 advantage in shots following the first
45 minutes, forcing Hogue to make seven saves. Following the break,
senior Steffi Yellin (Savannah, GA) replaced Hogue in net for the
Bears.
Brown had a great chance to get on the board in the 61st minute
when junior Sylvia Stone (Bronx, NY) raced into the box after a
lose ball and had BC goalie Jillian Mastroianni out of position,
but her one-timer sailed high of the net, as the Bears were kept
off the board.
Less than two minutes later, Gina DiMartino buried a feed from her
younger sister, Victoria, beating Yellin with a high shot to put
the Eagles up by three.
Brown had another golden opportunity to get on the board, but
junior Erika Lum's (Hawaii-Kai, HI) shot from outside the box hit
the cross-bar, as BC held onto the 3-0 lead. For the second time of
the night, the Eagles wasted little time in burying their next
chance, as Kristen Mewis chipped her shot from the left side past
Yellin, who finished with six saves, just two minutes after Lum's
near-score.
Maddie Payne capped the scoring with less than seven minutes
remaining when she headed the ball in off a corner kick from
Marissa Mello for the 5-0 final.
For the game, BC held a 31-8 advantage in shots and a 5-1 advantage
in corner kicks. Brown has a week off before returning to action on
Friday, September 11, when the Bears take part in the Arizona
Classic against host Arizona at 7:30 p.m. MST. Brown will also face
San Diego, currently ranked 12th in the country, on Sunday
afternoon, September 13, at the Arizona Classic.
