During the first day of competition at the ECAC Championship at Princeton University, the Brown men's water polo team earned an 8-4 victory over MIT, but then dropped a close 10-8 match against Princeton.
MIT battled with the Bears for three quarters with a highly
effective zone defense, but Brown was able to outscore MIT 4-1 in
the fourth to pull ahead and earn the win.
Both teams scored one goal in the first eight minutes and two in
the second to head into halftime tied at 3-3. Brown posted the only
goal in the third and then four more in the fourth to earn the 8-4
victory.
Two-time CWPA Northern Divison Rookie of the Week Svetozar Stefanovic (Belgrade, Serbia) led the offense with four goal and
two assists, as freshman Dean Serure (Coral Gables, FL), Zach Levko
(Wildwood, MO) Corey Schwartz (Los Angeles, CA) and Marcus Gartner
(San Jose, CA) each tallied one.
The defense was led by sophomore goalkeeper Max Lubin (Beverly
Hills, CA), who earned 14 saves in the cage during his first start
of the season for Brown.
Princeton was successful in avenging its recent 7-6 loss to
Brown with a 10-8 win last night. Bruno was down 4-0 early in the
game but was able to tack on two goals by junior Gordon Hood
(Carlbad, CA) and Levko late in the first quarter to cut its
deficit to 4-2 heading into the second quarter.
The Tigers kept the offensive pressure up, taking a 6-3 lead in
the second and then increasing it to 10-6 heading into the final
quarter. Brown outscore Princeton 2-0, but the deficit was too much
for Brown to overcome.
"I felt today our youth was exposed by a much more experienced team,” said head coach Felix Mercado. "Obviously this early in the season it's important to learn from mistakes and make sure that we improve. I was proud that our guys didn't give up after go down 4-0 early. We will be fine!"
Scoring for Brown was Stefanovic, Levko and Hood with two goals apiece, as Gartner and junior Brandon Yoshimura (Haverford, PA) added one. Senior captain Kent Holland (Orinda, CA) picked up 11 saves in net.
