Brown's valiant effort in the final few minutes of play
came up short as the squad fell 58-57 to Seton Hall during the
consolation game of the LIU Turkey Classic. Kandice Green and
Ebonie Williams led Seton Hall's offense with 13 points
apiece, and Christina Johnson and Lindsay Nickel paced Brown with
14 points each. Johnson strung together two solid performances this
weekend and was selected to the All-Tournament team. She combined
for 24 points, nine rebounds and went 8-of-8 from the free throw
line.
Freshman Lindsay Nickel scored 11 points in the first 20 minutes
of play to help the Brown women's basketball team head into
halftime tied 31-31 with the Seton Hall Pirates.
Despite Nickel scoring the team's first five points and
giving Brown it's only lead of the afternoon, the Pirates
rallied and gained control of the lead and would not give Brown
another sniff of a lead of their own. Both teams traded baskets
throughout the first stanza, but Seton Hall extended its lead to
six points at the 8:44 mark with the help of Kandice Green's
11 points which included a 7-of-8 effort from the free throw
line.
Down by six, Brown's Christina Johnson drove to the hole to
make the score 23-19 with 5:56 remaining, and after a Seton Hall
turnover Johnson drove to the hoop again and made the bucket and
the free throw after the foul to bring Bruno within one. But Green
went to work and scored the team's next six points to give
Seton Hall another five point lead with 3:50 on the clock.
Sophomore Aileen Daniels then nailed a jumper from the corner, but
Seton Hall answered right back with a jump shot of its own to
maintain its five-point advantage. The Bears made a run in the
final two minutes of the period, as Nickel hit her third trey of
the half to even the score at 29 with 20 seconds left. A Brown foul
put Green back on the line and converted both, but Johnson put in a
jumper in the paint to tie the score 31-31 at the buzzer as the
teams headed into halftime.
Nickel scored 11 points on four-of-seven shooting from the field,
and Johnson added seven. Brown held an 18-17 advantage in rebounds,
and recorded just seven turnovers in the half.
Seton Hall came out of the locker room ready to compete in the
second half, as they shot out to a five-point lead just four
minutes into play. The Pirates limited Brown to just one shot and
out-rebounded the squad 8-5 by the first media timeout.
Johnson sank two free throws at the 14:38 mark to cut
Brown's deficit to five, but Nicole Emory put in a jump shot
and Ebony Williams hit a trey to give the Pirates a 10-point lead
with 12:49 on the clock. A Courtney Lee free throw brought Bruno
within seven, but a rebound and put back by Whitney Wood extended
Seton Hall's lead back up to nine.
The Bears continued to shave a few points off its deficit
throughout the remainder of the game and made its final and best
run of the game in the final minute of play. A bucket by Daniels
brought Brown within three with 50 seconds remaining on the clock
and Hannah Passafuime drove to the hole and put the score at 58-57
with 33.5 seconds left. The Bears then forced Seton Hall into a
shot clock violation and had the ball with 3.1 seconds left in the
game, but were unable to score in the final seconds, and fell
58-57.
The Bears will host Boston University on Dec. 2, and will then
host its annual Brown BEAR Basketball Classic where it will take
UMass on Dec. 5 and either Quinnipiac or Morgan State the following
afternoon.
