PROVIDENCE, RI - Brown senior co-captains Bridget Ballard (Los Angeles, CA) and Melissa Kim (Bethesda, MD) have been named CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District in women's soccer. A back, Ballard earned a spot on the First Team, after earning Second Team honors in 2008, while Kim is making her first appearance on the team, earning Third Team honors. As a First Team selection, Ballard's nomination will now be forwarded on to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration. The team is selected by voting members of the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA).
Ballard currently has a 3.75 GPA and is concentrating in
Neuroscience. She has started all 14 of the Bears' games at center
back this season, after playing mostly center-mid last year. A
Second Team All-Ivy honoree in 2008, after earning Honorable
Mention All-Ivy honors in 2007, Ballard has started 61 career
games, missing just four, all due to injury. A selection to the
2006 Soccer Buzz Northeast Region All-Freshman Team, Ballard has
played nearly every minute of every game during her career. She is
a big part of the Bears' success in the air, using her 5'10" height
to win many headers, while helping to control Brown's midfield
transition. In 61 career games, Ballard has amassed 11 points on
three goals and five assists, including 1-2-4 numbers in 2008.
Ballard is also a member of Brown's swimming team, competing in
both freestyle and backstroke.
An Academic All-Ivy honoree in 2008, Ballard is also a member of
the National Scholars Honor Society. She has served in a variety of
volunteer capacities, including a local crisis hotline, the Brain
Awareness Outreach, the Health for Friends Clinic in Oklahoma, and
Loveworks Community Service Projects through her church. Ballard
also interned at both the Norman Surgical Clinic and the Dean McGee
Eye Institute.
Kim currently has a 3.33 GPA and is double concentrating in
Architectural Studies and Urban Studies. A four-year starter in the
midfield, Kim has played in 61 career games, starting 58, and
missing just four games during her career, all due to injury.
Melissa has finished among the Bears' top five scorers in each of
her four years, and has posted 30 career points on 10 goals and 10
assists. Kim currently ranks third on the team in scoring this year
with six points (2g, 2a) and ranks 18th all-time at Brown with 10
career assists.
Off the field, Kim has interned for the Transportation Planning
Agency in Bethesda, MD during both the summer of 2008 and 2009.
Kim, who studied in Rome during the spring of 2009, also received
an award for "Best IN Cartography" from the National Council for
Geographic Education for her research using digital mapping to
compare park access in Southeast vs. Northwest Washington, DC,
based on Socioeconomic factors.
Brown will close out the 2009 season this weekend when it travels
to New Haven to face Yale in a 7:00 p.m. match on Saturday.
