Providence,RI-The No. 15 Brown men's soccer team earned a
3-1 victory at Stevenson Field tonight in a battle against Rutgers
University. The Bears still remain unbeaten this season as their
record improved to 7-0-4 overall, while Rutgers dropped to 5-7 on
the year.
Both squads came out of the gates firing, as Rutgers held an 11-10
shot advantage over the Bears in the first 45 minutes of play. The
Scarlet Knights got on the scoreboard first at the 18:35 mark when
Ibrahim Kamara headed the ball past Brown goalkeeper Jarrod
Schlenker (Cranford, NJ). But that was the last ball to get past
Schlenker, who earned his first career start this evening and made
a career-high seven saves.
Brown answered back when senior forward T.J. Thompson received a
pass from forward Sean Rosa (Montreal, Quebec) who then chipped it
to senior midfielder Nick Elenz-Martin (Encinitas, CA).
Elenz-Martin then put one past goalkeeper Alex Morgans to tie the
game at 1-1.
The Bears played a tenacious second half as the squad dominated on
both ends of the field. Schlenker led the defense with seven
spectacular saves, while the offense out shot Rutgers 12-9 in the
final 45 minutes.
Rookie Thomas McNamara (West Nyack, NJ) led Brown's offense
by taking five shots in tonight's match, three of which were
on goal. He finally found the back of the net at the 62:27 mark
when he headed in a pass from Evan Coleman (Amherst, MA) off a Jay Hayward (Acton, MA) corner kick to tally his second career goal to
give the Bears a 2-1 edge over the Scarlet Knights.
The Bears weren't going to back down and continued to pick
apart the Rutgers defense. At the 70:58 mark, sophomore Mike Manella (Toluca Lake, CA) beat his defender and got knocked down by
Morgrans. With both Manella and Morgans on the ground, junior
captain David Walls (Leeds, England) was following right behind and
got to the ball and blasted one into the empty net to put the game
out of reach, 3-1.
Schlenker earned his first win of the year and picked up seven
saves in his 90 minutes of play. Morgans picked up five saves in
the loss and moved to 0-3-0 on the year. The Bears out shot Rutgers
22-20, but both squads were even, 6-6, in corner kicks.
The Bears will battle Ivy League foe No. 6 Harvard at 1:30 p.m. on
Saturday, Oct. 17 in Boston, Mass.
