Bears Drop Overtime Heartbreaker to Princeton, 1-0

PROVIDENCE, RI - Lauren Whatley connected on a pass from Sara
Chehrehsa just 2:08 into overtime to lift the Princeton women's
soccer team (5-6-1, 1-2-0) to a 1-0 victory over the Bears (3-6-0,
1-2-0) in Ivy League action Saturday afternoon at Stevenson Field.
The two teams battled for the entire game, in which wind was a
major factor, as both squads generated chances.
Despite getting outshot by a slim, 6-5, margin and going against
the wind in the first half, the Bears dictated the pace of play,
which was largely contested in the midfield. The Tigers did earn
six corner kicks in the half, but Brown was able to clear the ball
out all six times to prevent any Princeton goals. Senior Brenna Hogue (Concord, CA) stopped all four shots she faced, while Alyssa
Pont made one save for the Tigers.
The second half was more of the same, with Brown again controlling
the pace, and this time outshooting Princeton by a 6-2 margin. Pont
made saves on both shots that found her, including a diving stop on
a long shot by junior Sylvia Stone (Bronx, NY) from the left side
that appeared to be headed for the opposite corner.
Of the Tigers' two second-half shots, the most dangerous came in
the 59th minute when Whatley had Brown's defense scrambling.
However, her shot from the top of the box nailed the crossbar, as
the game remained scoreless.
Princeton had the wind to start overtime, and capitalized on the
only shot of the extra period. In the middle of the field,
Chehrehsa found Whatley racing down the left wing. Whatley fired
her shot into the opposite corner just past a diving Hogue,
clearing the Princeton bench.
For the game, Brown finished with an 11-9 advantage in shots, while
Princeton had the upper hand in shots on goal, 5-3. The only corner
kicks taken in the game were the six by the Tigers in the first
half, while both teams committed 10 fouls.
Brown will hit the road for four straight games, starting this
Wednesday, when the Bears travel to in-state rival URI for a 4:30
p.m. contest.
