- Induction:
- 2016
- Class:
- 1991
A former national champion, Olympian and participant in the famed Oxford-Cambridge race, Malcolm Baker ’91 has competed and thrived on the highest levels of rowing.
Baker’s road to success began in the fall of 1987. He was spotted by freshman coach, Val Ferme, in the registration line, and over the course of four years went from walk-on freshman to the recipient of the Fritz Pollard ’19 Award as Brown’s Male Athlete of the Year.
As a freshman in 1988, Baker helped lead Bruno to a 3-1 dual record, progressing to a runner-up finish at Eastern Sprints and a Freshman IRA Championship. Baker earned a spot in the varsity boat for the next three years, going 11-3 in dual races as a junior and senior. He wrapped up his collegiate career with a fourth-place finish at the IRA National Championship.
Baker, who twice competed at the World Championships as an undergraduate, rowed for the United States National Rowing Team in 1990 (Tasmania, Australia) and 1991 (Vienna, Austria). He then carried on the program’s longstanding association with the Olympic Games, as he represented the United States at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona and helped the US Eight to a fourth-place finish.
Following the Olympics, Baker took his talents overseas and rowed for Cambridge in The 139th Boat Race in 1993. One of the oldest and storied sporting events in the world, The Boat Race is an annual side-by-side rowing event between Oxford and Cambridge held along the River Thames in South West London. Baker sat in the sixth seat and powered Cambridge to a convincing victory, finishing in 17 minutes and winning by three and a third lengths.
After graduating from Brown, Baker received a Ph.D. in business economics from Harvard University and an M.Phil. in finance from Cambridge University.
