Two-time Eastern College Athletic Conference Gymnast of the Year Jayne Finst ’04 set the standard for gymnastics success at Brown and in the ECAC.
Finst won ECAC Gymnast of the Year honors in 2003 and 2004, becoming the first Brown gymnast to win the award and the first student-athlete in the history of the conference to garner the title in back-to-back seasons.
Upon graduation, Finst held program records on vault (9.775), beam (9.925), floor (9.900), and the all-around (39.175), breaking the all-around mark on three occasions. Finst still holds the school beam record and trails only Olympian Alicia Sacramone on the Bears’ all-time all-around list.
Over the course of her career, Finst earned myriad titles including ECAC all-around champion, ECAC beam champion, ECAC floor champion, Ivy Classic all-around champion, Ivy Classic beam champion, and Ivy Classic vault champion. Finst won both the ECAC beam title and the Ivy Classic all-around title twice. She gained All-ECAC plaudits in all four of her seasons, taking home First Team All-ECAC honors 10 times and Second Team All-ECAC honors 10 times.
A team co-captain, Finst won Brown’s Marjorie Brown Smith Award as a senior, presented to the Bears’ most outstanding female varsity athlete. She twice qualified as an all-around competitor for the NCAA Regional Championships. The consummate student-athlete, Finst gained Academic All-Ivy and ECAC All-Academic laurels three times each and served as Co-President of Brown’s Student-Athlete Advisory Board. She distinguished herself as a representative on the Ivy League Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, the Faculty Committee on Athletics and Physical Education, and the Student Leadership Committee.
In 2015, Finst garnered a spot in the inaugural ECAC Hall of Fame as part of a class that included such sports luminaries as former Boston College quarterback Doug Flutie, long-time St. John’s men’s basketball coach Lou Carnesecca, and the late Dave Gavitt, who founded the Big East conference.
