David Schwarz, the head coach of the men’s tennis programat Middlebury for 10 years, was named the head men’s tenniscoach at Brown in September 2010, in an announcement made by BrownDirector of Athletics, Michael Goldberger.
“I am excited for the challenge of Division I and the IvyLeague,” said Schwarz. “I am grateful for my time atMiddlebury and had a great situation there, but I am leaving foranother great situation. I am looking forward to getting startedwith the guys and being extremely competitive in the IvyLeague.”
The most successful men’s tennis coach inMiddlebury’s history, Schwarz concluded his 10thseason with an overall record of 174-37 (.825), while leading thePanthers to national prominence. Under Schwarz guidance, Middleburywon four straight NESCAC titles (2004-2007), winning its fifth andsixth titles in the past seven years in 2009 and 2010. His teammade eight straight trips to the NCAA final four, with the 2004squad capturing the school’s first NCAA Tennis Championship.Schwarz’s 2006 and 2007 teams set school records with 22 winsat the time, a mark that was eclipsed this spring when the Panthersearned a 23-2 mark en route to Middlebury’s second NCAATennis Championship.
The ITA Division III National Coach of the Year in 2004, Schwarzwas named NESCAC Coach of the Year in 2002, 2004, 2007, and 2010,and earned ITA Regional Coach of the Year honors in both 2009 and2010.
A 1989 graduate of Cornell, where he played four years ofvarsity tennis, Schwarz began his collegiate coaching career in thefall of 1996 as the Assistant Men’s and Women’s TennisCoach at Cornell. Following one year in that role, Schwarz was theAssistant Men’s Coach (1997-2000), spending the 1998-99season as an assistant with the women as well. The Northeast RegionAssistant Coach of the Year in 2000, Schwarz was also the ManagingDirector of the Cornell Tennis & Squash Center.
Originally from Providence, Schwarz received a master’sdegree from Cortland State in 1994.
