Kathy Flores, the head coach of the US Women’s National Team from 2002-10, recently completed her sixth season as the head coach of the Brown University women’s rugby team in 2019-20.
Under Flores' leadership, the Bears have reached the postseason in each of the last two seasons, advancing to the NIRA 15s Championship match in 2019 and the quarterfinals in 2018.
In 2016-17, Brown reached the Ivy Semifinals in 15’s and advanced to the third place game at Ivy 7’s in the spring. Flores had one player selected NIRA All-American and two named Honorable Mention All-American for 15's. Off the field, she received the a “Women of Achievement” honor from the YWCA Rhode Island.
In 2015-16, the Bears went 6-4 during the 15's season in the fall, reaching the Ivy League Championship Game and the NCWVRA Quarterfinals. In the spring, the team visited Europe and competed against the Switzerland National Team and the Czech Republic National Team. In the spring 7's season, the Bears finished second at Ivy 7's and third at Varsity 7's.
On June 4, 2016, Flores was inducted into the U.S. Rugby Hall of Fame.
In the program's inaugural season at the varsity level, Flores led the formidable Brown squad to a 9-1 overall record, including a perfect 7-0 mark against Ivy League opponents in the fall. For her efforts, Flores earned accolades as the USA Rugby Female Coach of the Year.
Flores took over Brown’s club rugby program in August 2013 with the program beginning varsity competition in September 2014.
In addition to her coaching at the national level, Flores has coached the San Francisco Fog Men’s Rugby Club (2010-13), the Berkeley All-Blues Rugby Club (2010-13), and the University of San Francisco women’s rugby club (2009-13).
Flores began playing rugby for Florida State University’s club team and went on to play for the US national team and the Berkeley All-Blues. As an undergraduate she competed in basketball and track & field at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania from 1973-77.
