Tim Gray, who has over 20 years of head coaching experience, recently completed his fourth season as the Brown men's tennis head coach in 2019-20.
Brown's 2019-20 campaign saw the program open the spring with six-consecutive victories while the Bears also defeated Michigan State on the road. Gray coached back-to-back Second Team All-Ivy recipients for singles in 2017-18 and 2018-19. His 2017-18 team posted its first winning record since the 2014-15 campaign, going 16-10. In Gray's first year (2016-17), Brown saw two student-athletes earn Second Team All-Ivy honors for doubles and reach a No. 44 ITA ranking over the course the season.
Gray has had a lengthy head coaching tennis career, both in the men’s and women’s game, that began in 1986. He boasts an NCAA Division III National Championship, an NCAA Division III national runner-up finish, four NCAA Regional titles, 13 NCAA Tournament appearances and seven conference championships. During his career, Gray's teams have upset the number one team in the nation in all three NCAA divisions.
Before Brown, Gray served as a senior consultant for Donovan Sports Strategies, with former Brown men’s tennis standout Tim Donovan ’89. There, he helped personalize college recruitment programs for high school athletes.
In 2013-14, Gray was the head coach of the men’s tennis team at Bradley before the program was discontinued by the University.
Prior to Bradley, Gray had a successful run as the head women’s tennis coach at Auburn from 2005-11. The Tigers received three-straight at-large bids to the NCAA Championship, while individuals were selected for the NCAA Singles Championship four consecutive years. Under Gray’s tutelage, the squad also defeated the nation’s No. 1 ranked team, won the SEC Western Division Title, and had three Tigers named All-America.
Before his stint with Auburn, Gray was the head women’s coach at Eastern Michigan from 2002-05, where he led the women to three consecutive Mid-American Tournament Finals.
From 1995-02, Gray was the head men’s coach at Florida Southern College, where he guided the team to a third-place NCAA Championship finish, seven consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, and two Sunshine State Conference Championships. He was also named the Sunshine State Conference Coach of the Year in 2000 and 2002.
Gray spent five years (1990-95) at his alma mater as the head men’s and women’s coach at Washington College. The team won the NCAA Division III National Championship in 1994 and was the runner-up in 1995.
Gray’s coaching career began at Widener in 1986-87 as the head men’s tennis coach.
A 1986 graduate of Washington College, Gray earned his bachelor’s degree in philosophy. He earned his master’s degree in sport science in 2005 from the United States Sports Academy. In 2007, Gray was inducted into the Washington College Athletic Hall of Fame.
Gray is married to Christine Franek Gray, Brown class of 1992. Christine, a native Rhode Islander, played tennis for the Bears and was a member of the 1991 Ivy League Championship team.
