Before Brown, Tynan was the volunteer assistant coach at Stanford for the 2018-19 season. In his role, Tynan planned workouts for sprint and mid-distance swimmers and was accountable for video recording and analysis of stroke mechanics and race strategy. He also held responsibilities in on-campus recruiting, CARA/RARA, planning meet-lineup and coordinating a lifting plan with the strength coach.Â

Prior to Stanford, Tynan served as a graduate assistant at Texas Christian University from 2016-18 after working as a student assistant coach at George Mason from 2014-16. Tynan's role with the Horned Frogs included working with all groups as well as coordinating student-athlete workouts. At George Mason, Tynan worked primarily with the distance and middle-distance groups while also handling administrative duties.
Â
As a student-athlete, Tynan swam at Maryland in 2011-12 before transferring to George Mason for the 2012-13 season – he owns top-ten times in the 500 and 1,650-yard freestyles as well as the 200-yard butterfly at George Mason.

Tynan earned a bachelor's degree in kinesiology from George Mason in 2016 where he received the John R. Linn Award for the graduating scholar-athlete in the School of Recreation, Health and Tourism who had achieved the highest overall grade point average while participating in an intercollegiate sport. He also obtained his master's in kinesiology with a concentration in sports psychology from TCU in 2018.Â
Originally from Westford, Mass., Tynan comes from a family of swimmers – his father, John, swam at Loyola (Maryland), his sister, Mara, swam at Washington and Lee and his mother, Mary Ellen, is an administrator for Maine Swimming, New England Swimming and Patriot Swim Club.
