Fluharty enters her second season on head coach Britt Broady's staff in 2023. Fluharty joined the staff prior to the 2022 season and helped guide the Bears to an 8-9 overall record. Brown's offense scored 1.94 goals per game, the most goals scored since the 2018 season. Brown began the season with five straight wins - the second-best start in program history. Brown also knocked off a ranked team for the first time since 2014, beating Miami (Ohio) in overtime at Goldberger Family Field.
Three Bears earned All-Ivy honors in 2022 with first-year Lucy Adams picking up First Team accolades. Lexi Pellegrino and Julia Hitti were also recognized by the conference.
“I am excited to welcome Maxine to the Brown Field Hockey Family!” said head coach Britt Broady. “During the interview process, it was very apparent that her values, coaching philosophies and competitive spirit are a strong match for our program. She is an excellent teacher of the game and will help our attackers become more dangerous on the field.
“As a top NCAA player and former professional athlete, Maxine will have high expectations for the Brown student-athletes but will be fun, passionate and patient in their development process. I’m excited for her expertise to add to our success this fall!”
In two seasons at the helm of Sussex Academy, Fluharty helped the team reach its first-ever state tournament and led the team to the state semifinals in 2021.
In her role with You Gotta Love It, Fluharty developed and taught a field hockey curriculum to over 150 athletes of all ages.
“I am so excited to be joining the Brown Field Hockey staff,” said Fluharty. “I believe that the program has fierce leaders and a determined Athletics Division that is going to instill amazing change. It's an honor to be able to work alongside this vision. This institution already has an elite bar set for academics and culture so I am looking forward to pushing the athletes to compete with the same expectations on the field.”
Fluharty was a standout player at the University of Maryland and was named the Big Ten Player of the Year and a unanimous First Team All-Conference selection as a senior in 2014.
The Delaware native was also named to the NFHCA All-Rookie squad and the NFHCA All-Mid Atlantic Second Team as a freshman in 2011 as the Terrapins captured the National Championship.
Fluharty earned a spot on the NFHCA All-Mid Atlantic First Team as a sophomore and junior as Maryland reached the Final Four in both seasons. The Millsboro, Delaware native picked up Third Team All-America honors and First Team All-ACC honors in 2013.
During her collegiate career, Fluharty gained considerable experience on the international stage, competing in several tournaments with the USA U21 National Team, notably competing in the Junior World Cub and Junior Pan-Am Games.
In May 2013, Fluharty competed with the Senior Women’s National Team at the Four Nations Tour in New Zealand.
Following her collegiate career, Fluharty spent 18 months playing professionally with the Hoofdklasse, Bloemendaal Dames.
